What’s been good?
This is how I start every session. In the first session I hear hmmm...not much! Or an awkward smile, a blank look, or just a long uncomfortable silence. By the time we get to our sixth session my clients manage to come up with a long list of small positive experiences that they have had throughout their day, one’s they would have previously barely noticed.
Why is is that? It is because we have a tendency to focus on the negative. We go through the day without noticing a single positive experience. Taking just a few extra seconds a day to stay with a positive experience; having a nice cup of coffee, a positive interaction with someone you love, or just taking comfort in a single breath. It’s also a way to treat yourself like you matter. This practice brings you into the present moment, and reduces rumination. It teaches you to have more control over your attention, or what I call kind attention, so you can keep it focused on what’s good for you and pull it away from what’s bad. Feeling better helps you to act better, which help the world treat you better. ’s been good?

Every year, on 10th September, organisations and communities around the world come together to raise awareness of how we can create a world where people understand that NOT being okay IS OKAY, a world free from su***de.

Despite the progress made in recent years to shine light on the importance of mental health and encouraging people to talk about it, many people are afraid of being stigmatised if they talk about their mental health struggles.

I understand that depression and anxiety can make the prospect of telling someone, or booking a therapist extremely intimidating.

Remind yourself every day: I am in charge of my happiness. I will not let anything outside of myself control me. I am creating a life that feels good on the inside and it will turn into experiences that are good on the outside.

Have you ever noticed how much effort it takes to take in the good, to concentrate on the positive?

It’s hard, isn’t it?! Especially in the beginning. But just by taking just few minutes a day to take in a positive experience, and to focus on what’s been good - the comfort of a single breath - you’ll help turn a passing mental state into a lasting neural structure. Over time, you will fill your inner ”bucket” with the strengths you need, such as love, understanding, fulfilment.
As a result, you can safely head out into deeper waters in pursuit of your dreams!
