If you’re feeling sluggish, bloated, flat or emotionally off over Christmas, it’s rarely because of one indulgent meal… It’s the constant intake, the eating from morning to night with no real breaks.

When the body never gets a break, blood sugar stays unstable, digestion is incomplete, and sleep becomes shallow. That’s when you wake up tired, crave more sugar the next day, and feel like they’ve “overdone it” before Christmas is even finished.

One of the simplest ways to avoid feeling like this is to skip a meal. Clear pauses between meals give digestion time to finish and recovery to take place.
Stopping before you’re overfull reduces inflammation and heaviness.
Letting the body wind down in the evening without digesting protects sleep, mood, and energy the next day.

Missing breakfast after a late dinner, or having a lighter day after a heavier one, allows insulin to settle, digestion to complete, and energy to stabilise. People often notice better sleep, less bloating, and clearer appetite cues within a day.

This is how you enjoy the season and feel well in it… Not by doing more, but by giving your body space.

People are often shocked when I say this, but it’s the truth:
I have never seen anything restore metabolic health faster than fasting.
Not supplements.
Not dietary protocols.
Not the next “optimisation” trend.

When you stop adding more, the body finally has the space to repair what has been neglected for years.
And the first organ to respond is the liver.

Because your liver is not just a detox organ.
It is the gatekeeper of your hormones, emotions, inflammatory load, and overall metabolic stability.
If you feel moody, inflamed, exhausted, or stuck in cycles you can’t explain, the liver is often the first place to look.

Fasting doesn’t force the body into healing, it simply removes the constant input that keeps the liver overwhelmed.
When that burden lifts, hormone clearance improves, inflammation settles, and your system finally returns to equilibrium.

This is why fasting works. Not by addition, but by subtraction.

During a fast, the body shifts into a state where detoxification becomes more efficient and less burdened by daily metabolic demands. Sauna exposure increases heat-shock proteins, which help repair damaged proteins and support the breakdown of dysfunctional cells. It also enhances circulation, encouraging the movement of toxins from deeper tissues into pathways the body can eliminate.

Transitioning into a cold plunge adds a second layer of physiological stress that improves mitochondrial function, reduces inflammation, and increases noradrenaline. This combination sharpens detox pathways by improving lymphatic flow and supporting the clearance of cellular debris created during fasting and heat exposure.

Most people think detox is something you add.
In reality, it is something you allow.
Remove the inputs, activate the stress pathways, and the body does what it was designed to do with precision.

Ageing isn’t simply the passage of time. It is the accumulation of cellular damage that your body never had the space or energy to repair. When you fast, you create that space by lowering growth signals like insulin, switching off constant digestion, and giving your cells permissionm to clean up where they’ve long ignored. Autophagy, DNA repair, mitochondrial renewal – the systems designed to keep you youthful – finally switch back on.

What makes fasting unique is that it activates the same longevity pathways triggered by intense exercise or cold exposure, but without the stress load. You still get AMPK activation, improved mitochondrial efficiency, and the upregulation of genes linked to resilience, but through quiet repair rather than a cortisol-driven spike.

This is why fasting feels different. It is not a fight-or-flight stressor. It is a return to biological order, a clearing of what was stored, and a recalibration of systems that were meant to protect you but became overwhelmed.

If you feel stuck, dysregulated or disconnected from your body, you don’t need more pressure. You need more rhythm.
Consistency repairs what chaos destroys.
It restores hormone signalling, heals trauma patterns, and rebuilds the internal trust you’ve lost over time.
My latest article reveals why consistency outperforms intensity in every area of healing and fasting.

Fasting isn’t just a biological process. It is a partnership between the body’s innate intelligence and our willingness to step out of the way.

Science shows us what happens on a cellular level: reduced inflammation, improved insulin sensitivity, heightened receptor responsiveness, autophagy, and a recalibration of the systems that keep us alive. But none of this can unfold without the voluntary pause. Without the surrender.

Because when the body is burdened, fasting becomes an act of mercy.
It halts the constant influx of work that modern living demands.
It clears metabolic queues, lightens the load on the liver and gut, and gives the nervous system space to soften.

And in that stillness, the body does what it was designed to do… Repairs, re-orders and restores.

And this is where science meets grace.

Three months is what it took. There were no extreme protocols and no restriction, just an unwavering commitment to wanting to reclaim her health, clear the noise, and give her body the chance to function at its best.

We removed the foods and chemicals creating constant inflammation, rebuilt her nutrition with real whole foods, whilst throwing out anything processed. Personalised her fasting plan around her age, hormonal needs and lifestyle, and lowered her toxic load by switching plastics, skin care and environmental disruptors.
No more chemical contraception. No seed oils. No gut irritants.

Her body responded exactly as it’s designed to: inflammation down, energy restored, headaches and migraines gone and best of all for her, no more painful periods.
This is what happens when you work with the body instead of against it.
Sustainable health becomes a lifestyle, not a fight, and you can literally see it on her face! 🤍

Fasting doesn’t heal you… your body does.
But fasting removes the biological interference that blocks that process.

When you reduce incoming energy and stimuli, several measurable shifts occur:
• Insulin drops, allowing access to stored fuel and reducing inflammatory signalling.
• Autophagy increases, clearing damaged proteins and dysfunctional cells.
• Cellular receptors become more sensitive, improving hormone utilisation.
• The liver and gut get a break from constant processing, improving detoxification efficiency.

We also don’t age simply because time passes. We age because of accumulation - metabolic waste, unresolved inflammation, mitochondrial damage, environmental toxins, and even unprocessed stress that keeps the body in a chronic sympathetic state.

Fasting reduces this load.
It targets the build-up at the physical, biochemical, and cellular level.
When the burden decreases, repair accelerates.
This is why fasting often improves markers like inflammation, insulin sensitivity, metabolic flexibility, and overall cellular health.

Remove the accumulation, and the body does what it is designed to do: recover, recalibrate, and restore function.

Most people overcomplicate fasting. The reality is, your body was designed for it. The goal isn’t to push harder. It’s to create a rhythm your physiology can trust.

Start with the basics: 12 hours. This single shift gives your digestive system a break, initiates mild autophagy, and begins retraining your metabolism away from constant glucose dependence. Once 12 hours feels effortless, extend gradually to 14, then 16. Let your body adapt at its own pace.

For women, adaptation must follow hormonal physiology. In the week before your menstrual cycle, taper fasting back. Your metabolic rate rises, progesterone increases, and your body is naturally more insulin resistant. Shorter fasts in this phase support nervous system stability, blood sugar balance, and cyclical hormone rhythms.

Across the month, build your fasting lifestyle around these principles:

• Consistency over extremity
• Increase fasting hours when oestrogen is naturally dominant
• Reduce fasting hours when progesterone peaks
• Prioritise nutrient density during eating windows
• Use fasting days to lower inflammation, support liver detoxification, and enhance receptor sensitivity

This is how fasting becomes a lifestyle rather than a challenge. Simple, sustainable and rooted in how your body was designed to function. Let your physiology lead, and the results follow.

We’ve been conditioned to treat hunger as a threat.
But biologically, hunger is a signal of capacity.
A reminder that your body still knows how to access stored fuel, knows how to repair and still knows how to survive without constant input.

The problem isn’t the food you eat.
It’s the lack of space you give your body to do anything else.
Endless digestion keeps your system busy processing, never restoring.
Fasting removes the workload so your body can finally turn its attention inwards.

This is where autophagy begins.
A built-in renewal mechanism that clears damaged cells, improves receptor sensitivity, supports metabolic balance and, over time, changes how your body uses hormones, not just how many you produce.

Most people never access it because they never pause long enough.
Not because their body is incapable, but because our culture has normalised constant consumption.

Fasting isn’t deprivation.
It’s restoration.
A return to the biological rhythms your body has been waiting for.

Did you know that many infections can lie dormant in the body for years, only to resurface when we’re physically, emotionally, or mentally run down?

It’s not uncommon for people to carry latent bacteria or viruses (like Lyme, Rickettsia, Epstein–Barr) that stay quiet until the body is under stress. When we push too hard — overexerting ourselves, losing sleep, drinking more, or travelling without proper rest — we create the perfect environment for these pathogens to reactivate.

After returning from holiday, my body reminded me of that truth. Between disrupted sleep, long travel days, overstimulation, and the stress of an overtired toddler on a midnight flight, my immune system finally crashed.

Fatigue, dizziness, and inflammation followed… a clear sign my system had shifted out of balance.

This is how the body protects us. When energy is low and stress is high, the immune system prioritises survival, not suppression of dormant infections.

The good news? With the right tools I’ve learnt along the way such as rest, hydration, nutrient-dense food, nervous system regulation, and consistency, the body can recalibrate and restore balance.

Healing isn’t about never falling; it’s about learning to recognise the signs earlier, respond with grace, and give the body what it needs to recover.
