Written by Rose Robbins, this beautiful children’s picture book is narrated by a young autistic girl who is non-speaking.

🗣️Robbins cleverly tells the story through a mixture of thought and speech bubbles for the sister and brother. ⁣

🌟 The story sensitively shares the sister’s thoughts and the challenges she faces sharing them with others using a variety of non-verbal communication. ⁣

🌟 It is presented thoughtfully and positively throughout, with an upbeat tone reinforced with bright, bold illustrations. ⁣

🌟 It is a joy to read and a great opportunity to share with all children so they can learn about children who may communicate differently to them. ⁣

The Huge Bag of Worries

Written by Virginia Ironside and illustrated by Frank Rodgers

Wherever Jenny goes, her worries follow her in a big blue bag! They are there when she goes swimming, when she is watching TV, and even when she is in the lavatory.

Jenny decides they will have to go. But who can she get to help her?

This humorous and reassuring story will appeal to all children who have occasional worries.

Jenny has always been happy, but she notices that recently she has been feeling different, gloomier.

"It wasn't just one thing; it was everything".

Until one day she wakes up with a huge blue bag of worries.

They follow her everywhere - to school, swimming, even to the toilet.

She tries to ignore the worries, but they keep coming back and getting bigger until her next door neighbour notices how huge the worries have become.

This popular children's book sensitively explores how overwhelming worries can feel for a child and how lonely the experience can sometimes be.

A bag growing heavier and heavier is something that younger children can visualise and a useful way to talk about strategies of how we can lighten the bag.

It encourages children to open up to others about what may be worrying them, no matter how big or how small.

🗣️ I Talk Like Me is a short, inclusive picture book written by Priya Devi Suresh that beautifully celebrates the different ways children communicate.

🌟 Inspired by Gestalt Language Processors who learn to talk in chunks rather than single words, this book offers children and parents a message of acceptance.

📚 Particularly as we learn more about Gestalt Language Processing, it is so important that children have the opportunity to read books that reflect their unique experiences. This book is exactly what we need!

🗣️ A lovely short book that centres acceptance and reminds us that every way of talking is to be celebrated.

It’s been a while but this one was worth the wait!

Written by Loren Crisp

Who is DLD and what cheeky things has he been up to?

My immediate reaction to flicking through this book, before sharing with my 9-year-old, is that this book just gets it.

The words are presented simply and clearly. The illustrations are not only fun but also have made a meaningful effort to support understanding. It's not long enough to be overwhelming, nor is it too short to feel too young for my son.

The book begins by introducing a character called DLD. DLD stands for Developmental Language Disorder and each word is broken down to explain exactly what this means.

Disorder is when something is mixed up. To explain this, there are lined up ducks labelled as "not disorder" and muddled ducks labelled as "disorder". My 9-year-old really liked this description because it just made sense to him.

As both a parent and a student speech and language therapist, I find it mind boggling that these terms can be so hard to understand and explain to our children. But this book does a fantastic job!

The book also explains why DLD happens and how this might feel. It also focuses on how to take care of yourself when you have DLD. For example, asking for pictures to support understanding and asking for help from teachers, family and friends.

The book shares how DLD looks different for everyone and changes as children grow older. It is a sensitive, accessible, well-thought out book that does a superb job of breaking down what DLD means and how it affects children's lives.

Ending on a positive, affirming note, this book is a great choice to share with children who have DLD.

When children understand themselves and how DLD impacts on them, they can be empowered and speak up for themselves. Children's story books are a gentle way to introduce the topic and can lead to conversations.

We posted previously about the range of books available in English which aim to introduce DLD to children, but DLD exists in every language. So here is a cute book from Brazil introducing DLD (or TDL in Portuguese) to children.

Congratulations to Arthur, who's only gone and landed himself a book deal at 7 years old! Arthur's poem, 'Do Animals Stammer' is now available as a picture book - and we sure are going to get ourselves a copy: https://t.co/Nx8QncdviL

Emma, Arthur's mum, told us, "It was STAMMA's previous campaign 'No Diversity Without Disfluency' about seeing people with a stammer in the media that compelled Arthur to enter the competition". Read Sarah Moriarty's review here: https://stamma.org/node/5206

Fantastic! Congratulations Jordan Fighting for my Voice: My life with Verbal Apraxia

EEK! 💙 I am so excited to announce my book, “A (Not) So Silent Christmas,” about my childhood with apraxia of speech in my new book series, “Jordan’s Journeys,” is coming out December 1st, 2023. Family has always been a very personal subject to me, as many of my family members, besides my mom, brother, and sister, didn’t take the time to understand me as a child.

While I was always thrilled about holiday events, I found that just because my immediate family was understanding didn’t mean everyone in my family was. In this book, you will read a story about a little boy who learned throughout these life experiences family isn’t just blood but those who take time to understand you and the person that you are genuine. I am giving Younger Jordan the voice he always wanted & deserved.

You can also sign up to receive a FREE handwritten holiday card from me here by filling out this form on my website here: https://fightingformyvoice.com/holiday-cards/ 💙

Throughout my life experiences, I learned how to turn my pain into a purpose and ensure nobody feels misunderstood this holiday year.

Best,
- Jordan LeVan 💙

This colourful, uplifting book by SLP Amanda Hartmann opens with an introduction about what AAC means and an invitation to find words that rhyme with AAC.

Each page is filled with a short phrase or sentence, and bright, clear illustrations that focus on children using their AAC devices and sharing the rhyme they have found.

I also enjoyed that the pictures include symbols as well as electronic devices. Many children with Speech, Language and Communication Needs will be familiar with symbols. They may have used them in speech therapy, at school and at home.

A wider variety of AAC devices are shown in the book too, including tablets, buttons and flashcards.

This is a great book that can be used as an introduction for all children about what AAC means and how children communicate using it.

More importantly, this book is a celebration of children who use AAC and would be a fantastic addition to schools to help further understanding of the different ways we can communicate with each other.
