Let's talk about attachment.....
It's so important to have a good attachment when breastfeeding. Why, you ask ๐คท๐ผโโ๏ธ
1. To avoid pain , breastfeeding should never hurt if bub is attached correctly. You may feel a slight tug/pull sensation at the start of a feed, but this should disappear and everything feel comfortable ๐
2. You need a good deep attachment - if bub is hanging onto the end of the nipple then you will get pain/nipple trauma. You are also not transferring milk effectively. They need to compress your areaola where the milk ducts sit to release milk.
3. The nipple should look the same as it did when you started.... nice and rounded (Obviously, they may be a bit longer) . No lipstick looking nipples where they are becoming pinched.
4. Lips nicely flanged out to achieve a good seal around the breast and transfer milk effectively. Sometimes, you may notice sucking blisters on their top lip if it's flanged under.
5. Chin tucked into the breast and nose clear. Allowing bub to get a good attachment, be comfortable, and feed well.
6. Positioning - Bub should always have their neck and spine in alignment to feed. Not have their head/neck twisted one way and their body another.
7. A nice relaxed mumma makes for a nice relaxed bubba ๐ซถ๐
