That being said, it is an significant intervention alongside traditional interventions such as CBT.
Some inspirations for this post lie with Dr Mason Turner’s, chief psychiatrist at Kaiser Permanente Hospital, views on massage therapy and Dr Sharon Farber’s, Psychology Today, experiences with adhesive capsulitis following the loss of her mother.
I didn’t want to describe the individual hormones and their effects in the slides - because you frankly could write a book on each of them!
🔹 Dopamine/Serotonin - neurotransmitters critical for healthy bodily function - in particular sleep, memory, metabolism, and mood regulation. Often referred to as ‘Happy Hormones’ their deficiency is linked to depression, anxiety, difficulty concentrating, trouble sleeping, and weight gain
🔹 Oxytocin - the ‘Love Hormone’ plays a role in reproduction, and encourages prosocial behaviour through the building of trust. Mother’s bodies are flooded with oxytocin during childbirth, which links to greater bonding with their children
🔹 Endorphins - your natural painkillers, typically released in response to mental or physical stress. They are responsible for that euphoric feeling and well-being subsequent to a rub down. Healthline suggests massage along with mediation, aromatherapy, indulging in chocolate/wine, or simply bathing in the Great British sunshine as ways to boost levels
🔹 GH - a peptide involved in normal human development, cell reproduction, and regeneration. Now massage doesn’t make GH but it indirectly increases availability by encouraging sleep and reducing cortisol
🔸 Cortisol - main stress hormone, fuelling internal flight-or-flight instincts. Chronically raised levels are associated with anxiety, depression, difficulty concentrating, trouble sleeping, and weight gain - can we see a pattern here?
🔸 Epinephrine/Norepinephrine - neurotransmitters and hormones released in response to activation of sympathetic nervous system in response to stress. Typically increasing blood pressure, heart rate, and distribution of cardiac output.
