🔎🧠 Calling all Wind Instrumentalists worldwide!! 🌎

Do you play a wind instrument?
Please participate in my research regarding Performers Health and Wellbeing & Performance Education by scanning the QR Code in the image below or by filling in my questionnaire at https://forms.office.com/r/rTnUKuC9sb

My name is Tiago Carvalho. I am working on my research project from my MSc dissertation at the Centre for Performance Science at the Royal College of Music, London.

The research questionnaire was originally designed in English but is also available in Portuguese! 🇬🇧🇵🇹🌎

In Summary, this research proposes to answer the research question “What common concepts and metaphors do wind instrumentalists use to understand how to use their bodies in performance?”. Wind instrumentalists use a range of concepts and metaphors to describe ways of playing their instrument and the sounds they produce, but these concepts are not always consistent or accurate which can make their use harmful over time for musicians’ health. This research examines several commonly held concepts and the degree to which they are used and understood. This knowledge will be used to understand which concepts are most common so that they might be compared with knowledge of how the body functions to determine whether they are accurate and helpful.

Thank you very much for your cooperation!

Lecture at “Festival International de Trombone - APT” in Braga, Portugal .inter.trombone
“Functional Biomechanics in wind players’ performance: Myths, Facts and implications on health and wellbeing”

Delivering my very first lecture as an aspiring performance scientist, as an individual that had to change part of his ambition as a musician and doing a long term break in performance due to a performance-related condition called “Musicians Focal Dystonia”. It will always be ok to not be ok, to know when to stop, to rest, to look for self-care and when it’s the time to rest(art) again at each one’s rhythm.

Resilience keeps me understanding that “out of adversity comes opportunity”, looking to educate myself with new knowledge, new understanding, new perceptions and perspectives.
This is a new chapter and a great new challenge in another type of performance 💪🏽

In this humble lecture, it will be shared some perceptions, perspectives and analysing some concepts that hopefully will help performers to understand the necessity of caring and listening to their body first, physically and mentally.

Breaking taboos and stigmas about performance is one of the most important elements to have a healthier career, a healthier life, either as a performer and individual.

Performance is present in every single domain and area. It’s important to start looking at it as something that we all have in common.
Each one of us has similarities to an athlete, to an artist, to any other domain. It is time to see things from multiple perspectives and increase our perceptions, not just to have better performance excellence but to have better life excellence.

“It’s insanity doing the same thing and expecting different results”
“Nothing changes if nothing changes”

Performance often requires lots of energy, time, dedication, concentration. Life comes with joy, happiness, success but also comes with obstacles, sadness, limitations and failure. Both of them are part of each ones process, each one path, each one learning.

It is as important knowing when is time to work as when is time to make a break. It is not just for you body but also for your mind.

“If you get tired, learn how to rest and not to quit”

Take care of yourself
Take care of your body
Take care of your mental health
Take care of your life

This is awareness that has to be repeated over and over again. Acquiring new habits takes practice. Start practicing now how to rest.

…and, as always, if you feel you need support, don’t be afraid to use your voice and ask for help. 🗣❤️‍🩹

Let’s break some misconceptions in brass players performance:

To all brass players, here is one of the best and simplified explanation about “the corners” on an embouchure.

Great work from Brass Rehab.!!
