🌍 Internet Addiction Among Youth Across 26 Countries: Psychological, Personality, and Socioeconomic Determinants |
📍Published in Public Health Journal

🌟 Why it Matters:
This study underscores the urgent need to screen for internalizing and externalizing problems among youth, account for personality traits, and recognize the family and socioeconomic context in addressing internet addiction globally.

A major cross-national study published in Public Health reveals that nearly 4 in 10 youth worldwide (38.4%) aged 15–24 meet criteria for internet addiction, with prevalence ranging from 24% in Cameroon to 62% in Vietnam.

🧠 Key Insights:

1- Adolescents aged 15–19 are at highest risk
2- Psychological distress, negative emotionality, and personality traits increase vulnerability
3- Family supervision and prosocial behaviors act as protective factors
4- Socioeconomic and national income levels significantly shape risk

📢 New Publication Alert!

🌍 We’re proud to share a new global publication from the Global Researcher Club (GRC) examining healthcare workers’ experiences during the evolving COVID-19 pandemic.

📝 “Cross-national disparities in healthcare workers’ perceptions: Examining fear of infection and confidence in the received COVID-19 vaccines amid emerging variants”

📍 Published in PLOS ONE | December 12, 2025

📍Submitted: July 29, 2024

🔍 Why does this matter?

As new SARS-CoV-2 variants continue to emerge, healthcare workers (HCWs) remain on the front lines—yet their perceptions, fears, and confidence in vaccines vary widely across regions.

Based on data from 5,843 HCWs across multiple global regions, this study reveals that:

⚠️ 40.5% of HCWs reported extreme fear of infection from emerging variants

💉 Only 41% of vaccinated HCWs showed good confidence in the received COVID-19 vaccines

Fear and vaccine confidence were strongly influenced by socioeconomic status, geography, health conditions, and personal circumstances

🔑 Key takeaway:

High vaccine coverage alone is not enough. Addressing psychological fear, inequities, and trust gaps among HCWs is essential for sustaining pandemic preparedness and response.

👏 Congratulations to the international research team, Led by Dr. Mai Hussein and Dr. Assem Gebreal M.D. , and supervised by Dr. Ramy Ghazy as senior and corresponding author. 🔍 Why Does This Matter?
Children with Down syndrome are at high risk of thyroid disorders, which can significantly affect growth, development, and quality of life if not optimally managed.

Our study—conducted across major healthcare centers in Southern Saudi Arabia—reveals critical insights:

More than half (52.8%) of children with Down syndrome had thyroid dysfunction

Subclinical hypothyroidism was the most common condition, followed by autoimmune hypothyroidism

Family history was the strongest risk factor, increasing risk more than fourfold

Despite good screening coverage, treatment optimization remains a major gap, with many children requiring levothyroxine dose adjustment

These findings highlight the urgent need for better dose optimization, standardized diagnostic algorithms, and stronger long-term surveillance for this high-risk pediatric population.

👏 Congratulations to the outstanding research team led by Dr. Youssef Ali Alqahtani and Dr. Ramy Mohamed Ghazy, and all collaborators from King Khalid University, Shaqra University, and Alexandria University, for this important contribution to pediatric endocrinology and child health.

This work reflects the power of collaborative research in advancing evidence-based care for vulnerable populations.

"A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis on Parental Uptake and Willingness to Vaccinate Children Against Human Papillomavirus in the Eastern Mediterranean Region" is now live! Published in Vaccine Journal—one of the leading journals in the field!

🔍 Why Does This Matter?
Cervical cancer remains a critical public health challenge in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (EMR). To eliminate cervical cancer, 90% of girls must be vaccinated by age 15.

Our findings—based on 33 studies and 18,455 parents—reveal a stark reality:

61% of parents are willing to vaccinate their children, yet

Only 7% uptake rate—far below the WHO’s target.

We identified key determinants and barriers to HPV vaccine uptake, providing actionable insights to integrate the vaccine into national programs and address misconceptions.

Congratulations to the GRC collaborators led by Dr. Assem Gebreal and Dr. Ramy Ghazy and all GRC Collaborators Dr. Rasha Ashmawy, Marafi Ahmed, Maha Khattab, Karim Samir Shata, Abdalla Elmansoury, Haimi Estifanos, Mahmoud Eissa, Wagd Ahmed, Hussein Mohsin Hasan, Ajda Mahmutaj, Youmna Abourady, Logina Ali Ezz El Arab, Malaz Abass, Riddhi Adhyaru.

This achievement wouldn’t have been possible without your dedication and collaboration. Together, we’re shaping interventions to accelerate progress toward the WHO’s mission of eliminating cervical cancer in the EMR.
