World Su***de Prevention Day — 10 September
This campaign was created by Samaritans and co-created with people who have lived experience of suicidal thoughts.
Today, we stand with Samaritans to highlight a simple but powerful truth: “If you think someone might be suicidal, take action, interrupt their thoughts, and show them you care.”
People with lived experience have shared that even small interruptions—like a sincere “hello,” checking in, or just being present—can break through overwhelming thoughts. It’s those brief human connections that can bring hope in the darkest moments.
Here are a few ways you can help interrupt suicidal thoughts:
• Send a message or make a quick call — just letting someone know they’re not forgotten can be life-saving.
• Be present and listen—without judgement, without trying to fix—your care alone can make a difference.
• Ask openly and compassionately, even if it feels difficult: “Are you having suicidal thoughts?”—just showing you’re willing to talk can bring relief.
• Help them focus on something positive or distracting, like a shared memory, a walk, or even a cosy chat—that pause can help them breathe.
You don’t have to be an expert to help—just being there, showing you care, can change everything.
Need support? Samaritans are available 24/7: call 116 123 (free, UK & ROI) or visit their website. You can also call NHS 111 and press Option 2 for mental health.
Please remember that you are not alone. ❤
