What's the reason for your listening difficulties? It might a combination of factors or just one of them. A holistic approach will answer this question.

There are no questions about the existence of listening difficulties despite normal audiograms. However, most audiology clinics in the UK still overlook those cases. What about starting to consider speech tests in quiet and noise conditions? This was one of the topics I discussed today at Aston University in Birmingham.

Thanks for the invitation and the opportunity to share evidence-based information on this neglected topic.

Extremely honoured to be part of the group of international invited speakers of the III International Conference of the Portuguese Society of Speech Therapy (Sociedade Portuguesa de Terapia da Fala). The event will be between 25-27 May in Lisbon and I will be talking about auditory processing and its intersection with language e cognition. Finally, The British Society of Audiology (BSA) will hold an in-person conference this year, the first after the pandemic. And there will be two talks about APD! One of them is Harvey Dillon speaking about his APD assessment approach in "Separating the causes of listening difficulties in children". The conference will be held on the 4th and 5th of June in Birmingham.

By the way, I'm happy to be in the advertising picture! It shows Prof Dave Moore and I in one of the BSA conferences many years ago.

This a very cool paper from Nature showing that a custom-designed video game can lead to performance benefits in trained and non-trained cognitive skills in older adults (60 to 85 years old). It demonstrates not only the plasticity of the prefrontal cognitive control system in the ageing brain but also a powerful tool to make this happen.

Keen to join a short course about Auditory Processing Disorder? This one, organized by UCL, is probably the best in the UK. This year, Prof Christian Fullgrabe will be talking about cognition and speech in noise difficulties and Prof Charles Hulme will discuss Developmental Language Disorders and interventions. I will be talking about auditory training in children and adults. For more information, check https://www.ucl.ac.uk/ear/study/cpd-courses/auditory-processing-and-related-disorders

Acquired APD is one of the three categories of APD, according to BSA (2018). This category must be considered with caution by audiologists, as it requires medical approach.

Auditory Processing Disorder has been recognised as a disorder by the World Health Organization, despite all the controversies involved. This is a step forward and a great indication of growing consensus about this specific condition.

Excellent paper showing the risk of long-term functional hearing deficit for children with middle ear disease history in childhood. The authors investigated binaural speech perception ability, through the LiSN-S test, in two groups of children with normal hearing: the first had a history of middle ear disease (such as “glue ear”), and the second one never had ear/hearing problems. The results demonstrated significantly poorer outcomes for the group with a history of middle ear problems. In addition, it also indicated that the earlier the onset of middle ear problems or the longer the duration of the problem, the worse the outcome.

Delighted to be at the British Academy of Audiology (BAA) Conference, finally watching two talks about APD, a topic typically not included in scientific conferences in the UK. One of the highlights was the suggestion given by Prof. Bamiou, one of the presenters, about thinking beyond the controversies of separating sensory vs cognitive factors and considering the whole picture of the condition together. She raised the discussion about replacing the term Auditory Processing Disorder with Auditory Cognitive Disorder. Perfect!

This doesn't mean that the individual does not have auditory processing difficulties. It means that the nature of those difficulties must be investigated through a broader approach.
