Nasal breathing can boost oxygen levels by 20% at any given time.

Breathing through the nose increases airway resistance. Because the nose is smaller than the mouth, it slows down the breathing rate and, in turn, allows the air to be warmed, filtered and moisturised within the nasal cavity, allowing for better gas exchange in the lungs.

When air flows through the nose, we create nitric oxide gas. Nitric oxide opens up and dilates the blood vessels within the lungs, improving blood flow and oxygenation.

After a short summer break, we're back at Exhale HQ.

What did we miss? The use of mouth tape has been in the press consistently over the summer, especially in the sports world. Two of the world's best athletes acknowledged wearing mouth tape.

World No. 1 Tennis player Iga Swiatek was pictured wearing mouth tape whilst training. Doing so promotes proper breathing through the nose, which can improve oxygen intake and enhance endurance during physical activities.

Footballer Erling Haaland said that he wears mouth tape when sleeping. Wearing mouth tape can improve sleep quality, reduce snoring, improve facial structure, increase oxygen intake to make you feel refreshed when you wake up, and so much more.

To find out more, we've written an article all about the benefits of mouth tape on the Exhale app.

Nasal breathing boosts oxygen levels by 20% at any given time.

There are many reasons nasal breathing increases oxygenation, and here are just a few examples for you and what is happening on a physiological level.

Breathing through the nose increases airway resistance. Because the nose is smaller than the mouth, it slows down the breathing rate and, in turn, allows the air to be warmed, filtered and moisturised within the nasal cavity allowing for better gas exchange in the lungs.

Secondly, when air flows through the nose, we create a gas called nitric oxide. Nitric oxide opens up and dilates the blood vessels within the lungs improving blood flow and oxygenation.

Breathing is often called the overlooked pillar of health because many underestimate its importance in our overall wellbeing. Despite its automatic nature, the significance of breathing in sustaining both our physical and mental wellbeing cannot be overstated.

For example, how we breathe can impact our stress levels, immune function, and cognitive performance. Mindful breathing practices, such as diaphragmatic breathing, can help promote relaxation and enhance our overall quality of life. Neglecting this essential aspect of health can lead to various issues, from increased anxiety to decreased energy levels.

The Exhale app is free to download and gives you access to valuable tools and exercises to support and enhance your breathing, contributing to better physical and mental health.

Although it may sound odd, there are incredible benefits to sleeping with our mouths loosely taped shut when we sleep.

Wearing mouth tape can improve sleep quality, reduce snoring, improve facial structure, increase oxygen intake to make you feel refreshed when you wake up, and so much more.

We've written an article all about the benefits of mouth tape on the Exhale app.

Today is National PTSD Awareness Day. Post-traumatic stress disorder affects countless individuals, causing immense anxiety and suffering. Recent research with military veterans facing PTSD revealed promising results. Participants who practised double-length exhales experienced significant reductions in symptoms like hyperarousal and traumatic event re-experiencing. If you or someone you know is struggling, consider trying and sharing this simple technique:

Breathe in for 4 seconds
Breathe out for 8 seconds

Try this for a few minutes daily - in the morning, lunch, and evening.

If too difficult, breathe in for 3 and breathe out for 6 seconds instead.

Together, let's spread awareness and empower others to explore effective strategies for managing PTSD.

On average, the lungs lose 12% of their capacity between the ages of 30-50.

Breathwork exercises improve lung capacity by increasing respiratory muscle strength, enhancing oxygen uptake, and promoting lung elasticity, thereby counteracting the natural decline in lung function that occurs with age.
