Yoga can be seen to have many benefits for our physical and mental health especially in current times with so much going on around us. Yoga has the potential to help us greatly with physiological issues and long term illnesses caused by a blocked soul and spirit, feeling caged in and fearful together with other elements and environmental factors that all contribute to imbalances in our system.

If you want to gain deep insight and knowledge into the therapeutic application of yoga for obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular disease and arthritis, and how to work with clients with these conditions in private one to one or group class settings, don’t miss our Live-online Yoga Therapy CPD Workshops coming up this weekend with Lucia Micheluzzi and Amy Waring.

Suitable for both Yoga Practitioners and Teachers.

Notes are included and recordings will be available to be kept for two months for you to refer back to.

Saturday 3 October; 10am – 6pm; Yoga for Obesity, Hypertension & Cardiovascular Disease with Lucia Micheluzzi

Teach yoga have been following developments impacting the globe closely and reviewing our training modalities to maintain our services while prioritising the welfare of all.

Elena will finally put into action what she has been asked to do for the past 15 years or so, which are videos and online interactive courses for engaged training for small groups, so that our practices can continue and she can still reach and connect to all our friends in Israel, America, Italy, Austria, Spain, India and across the globe. Social distancing is very important at the moment but that does not mean that we need to feel disconnected. We need to be filled with energy, driven by courageousness and kindness rather than fear which dries the heart.

Elena started working on an online platform for remedial and advanced training a while ago in 2008 in collaboration with Duncan Wong and Cameron Shayne in the form of EvolveYourYoga but the platform didn’t launch because of a lack of time and technical resources that were not available at the time. Now it is possible, and this is the time to make it happen, so watch this space for details or, you can register your interest by emailing info@teachyoga.com..

LOVE.
In the aftermath of we offer a few thoughts on today. In our world of digital experiences and social media there's even more danger than before of a disproportionate importance being put on the gestures and performance of romantic love, rather than actual heartfelt love. In the absence of simply telling someone from the heart that you love them, the knock on effect is that ideas of what constitutes love get misshapen.
This is especially true for young people and teens as they embark on their journey of discovering and learning and finding love in it's multiple incarnations in the midst of so many different influences. Seeking love is a journey that always leads back to ourselves, as without loving ourselves it's incredibly difficult to offer healthy love to others.
How do we find self-love so we can nurture ourselves?
How do we teach confidence to teens to enable them to find the self-worth to allow them to form wholesome relationships?

How do we teach our youth that self love, self care and self respect are the foundations of healthy relationships?

At Inspirer we focus on teaching teens to find and nurture self love, self care and self esteem so they can interact with their world confidently and safely, building healthy relationships based in self love and self care.
Our next course begins in April and we'd love you to join us in revolutionising the world one young person at a time!

What happens to the body with month-breathing?

Mouth breathing is when you inhale and exhale through your mouth instead of your nose. It's more common for people to do this at night but some can also do it during the day too.

When you breathe through your nose, the air passes over mucus membranes and mixes with nitric oxide which kills bacteria and helps the body’s heart and blood vessels to function. It also moistens the air to prevent dryness in the lungs, increases oxygen uptake, ensures better blood volume and lung volume, maintains body temperature, helps brain function and exercise function.

What causes mouth breathing?

There are several causes of a blocked nasal airway which cause mouth breathing including:

• Allergies or a cold
• Infection
• Enlarged tonsils or adenoids
• The shape of the nose and jaw
• Nasal polyps
• Deviated septum
• Stress and anxiety

Mouth breathing is occasionally necessary when you have a cold or exercising strenuously but if you breath regularly through your mouth, important stages of the breathing process are missed which can lead to several health problems including:

• Fatigue
• Dehydration
• Stress on the heart and lungs
• Dental problems such as periodontal disease, cavities
and halitosis
• It can change your appearance, jaw position and face
length.
• It can worsen symptoms of other illnesses.

In children, mouth breathing can cause:

• Enlarged tonsils
• Slower growth rate
• Changes in face shape and jaw size
• Irritability
• Dehydration and dry lips
• Fatigue and problems with concentration during the day

How can it be prevented?

Learn to take conscious control of your breath and how to breath well and effectively and practice nose breathing. This is where yoga and breathwork come in as they help you to learn and practice functional breathing.

Stress management and relaxation practices also activate the parasympathetic nervous system, promoting slower breath through the nose.

You can also:
• Sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated to
open up the airways
• Make sure your house is kept free from allergens
• Install air filters
• Use saline sprays or mists

With all the logistics and challenges that we face we can end up feeling lost, out of control and destabilised and this in turn can translate into anxiety. This can also lead to feelings of inadequacy, self doubt and hopelessness.

This is especially true for young people and teens as they embark on their journey of discovering who they are and finding their place in a rapidly shifting world and in fluid social situations.

How do we find and maintain a sense of stability?

How do we create safe and stable environments for our youth?

How do we teach our youth to navigate the inevitable destabilising challenges they will face?

At Inspirer we focus on teaching teens to create their own stability and their own safe space. We teach you to help teens identify the triggers which cause anxiety and a sense of not coping and to teach strategies to cope with stressful experiences and environments. JOY

This is one that comes naturally to us, young children are joy incarnate and in their natural state this is what would define their being. As they enter the world this joy is re-shaped, re-moulded and often lost entirely as children respond to the demands placed on them.

Are adults able to experience pure joy?

Can we re-learn joy?

Can we help our youth maintain their sense of joy or find it again when it's lost?

At Inspirer we believe that cultivating and re/learning joy is paramount to health and wellbeing. Write something back to us and we'll give you a 10% discount to join our next inspirational and life changing course to truly make a new start in the New Year!!!

UPENDING A DOWNWARD DOG
One of the most classic and well known poses in yoga is Adho Mukha Svanasana or Downward Facing Dog. We’ve posted about this one before, and mentioned it when talking about forward folds. Today we have a simple question:

WHY WOULD YOU MODIFY A DOWNWARD DOG USING JUST A CHAIR?

Modifying a Downward Dog by placing the arms on a chair has a number of benefits, but in short with this simple modification we learn:

🌈scapula placement and shoulder stabilisation

🌈the correct placement of the arms in relation to the shoulder socket- which in turn improves neck and placement

🌈to engage the serratus muscles to support the arms and torso

🌈to create space in the groin and abdomen

🌈to create length the spine from tailbone to head

🌈correct foot and leg placement in relation to the hips

So although this could be seen as a simplification of the pose, what we are in effect really doing is distilling the larger actions of the Downward Dog pose into components, and doing this allows us to focus on the subtler actions at work and so deepen our practice and gain more benefit from the pose.

A WELCOME BACK TO FORMER STUDENTS & LOOKING FORWARD TO FUTURE SESSIONS!

What an absolute pleasure it was to start our new British Wheel of Yoga course and run some CPD Yoga Therapy Workshops which were full of teachers coming back to learn with Elena; some after months and some after years. Revisiting and deepening their knowledge of structural awareness, postural awareness, maintaining healthy mobility when practising various disciplines and overall principles of posture and practice.

Elena is also a level 1 Triathlon coach and she has designed a very bespoke method to incorporate yoga in training for these particular disciplines, in order to stretch parts of the body without causing any injury to the joints. Keeping that stability and endurance going rather than just over stretching the muscles and creating issues in relation to keeping the connectivity going.

We can’t wait for our next sessions with amazing students in a wonderful learning and healing environment!

Teach Yoga is excited to announce that we’re offering a range of CPD Workshops in Yoga Therapy!

Twisted Body and Twisted Brain

It is commonly thought that everything begins from the mind and whilst this is true, over the 20 years that Elena has been teaching privately she has found fascinating correlations between a twisted body and shall we say a ‘twisted’ mind. This has informed her unique approach to working with bodies and this is the knowledge and understanding that she has melded with other techniques to create the unique Inspirer program tailor-made for the specific anatomy and challenges of teenagers.

Looking at the two pictures below it is easy to assume which person would be able enough to survive or outrun an attack. Looking at the person on the right we can easily identify postural traits on which we can base this assumption.

Conversely, the person on the left will have difficulty in adjusting/adapting. With just a brief look at the posture we can clearly see that the line of gravity which bears down from above will compress his neck and will compress his back so consequently:
• Breathing capacity will be diminished
• Throat capacity will be compromised
• The head will drop forward

And this is just the beginning as these physical impingements will have an effect on the childs emotional and psychosocial wellbeing too.

SO WHAT CAN YOU DO TO IMPROVE TEEN WELLBEING?
