"Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can." ~ Arthur Ashe

You do not have to change your entire life overnight! One of the reasons New Year's Resolutions so often fail is that people try to make big changes all in one go. Human beings don't work that way!

The best way to create a new habit is to start small and build over time. To get started on that journey, you need a clear idea of where you're starting from. Journaling is an effective tool for getting to know yourself. We bet as soon as you start thinking about your daily routine and your daily habits, you'll be surprised by what you're doing and how much time it takes you!

That's why journaling is so effective: it makes you stop and think about what you're doing, and it makes you break everything into smaller chunks. Once you know where you're starting from, our journals will help you keep track of what you want to change. Just writing it down focuses your mind on what's important, what affects how you're feeling, and what is dragging you down. You can implement changes and assess whether they make a positive impact on your mood. Then you can decide what to keep - and what to bin!

Not sure how to start journaling? The Journalise.Journal 101: the perfect tool to support your mental health self care, guiding you to build a journaling habit

Mental health has started to become a topic people will talk about. The stigma surrounding it is fading, and awareness is rising, but we still have a long way to go.

We know if you want something, anything of value, it takes work, courage, dedication, and commitment to get it. Sometimes, the whole thing seems insurmountable, and it's easy to just carry on with the whirlwind of self-doubt, anxiety, and misery that feels so familiar. We're here to say don't be daunted. Journalise journals help you take that first step.

If you want to make a change and don't know where to start, Journalise journals can show you the way.

A goal without a plan is just a dream. Do you set yourself goals? It's great if you do, but do you ever reevaluate those goals and ask yourself whether they're still relevant?

Have you ever worked hard for something only to achieve it - and then realised you no longer want it or care about it? You carried on working for it because you'd set it in your head - but you'd never checked along the way if it was still worth the effort.

Journaling will help you set goals and then help you measure your progress as you work towards them. During the process, you'll be asked to consider whether the goal is still valid to you or whether it needs modifying.

Goals aren't set in stone because life throws us curve balls. Journaling helps you bat those balls and stay on track.

What can you expect from a Journalise journal?

You can expect prompts to help you think about what you're doing, why you're doing it, and how it makes you feel. For example, one of the first set of questions is this:

𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 ℎ𝑜𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 𝑔𝑒𝑡 𝑓𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑠 (𝑗𝑜𝑢𝑟𝑛𝑎𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑔) 𝑝𝑟𝑜𝑐𝑒𝑠𝑠?
𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑒𝑐𝑡𝑎𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛𝑠?
𝑊ℎ𝑦 𝑑𝑖𝑑 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑡ℎ𝑖𝑛𝑘 𝑖𝑡 𝑤𝑜𝑢𝑙𝑑 𝑏𝑒 ℎ𝑒𝑙𝑝𝑓𝑢𝑙 𝑡𝑜 𝑦𝑜𝑢, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 ℎ𝑜𝑝𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 𝑎𝑐ℎ𝑖𝑒𝑣𝑒?
𝑊ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑎𝑟𝑒𝑎𝑠 𝑜𝑓 𝑦𝑜𝑢𝑟 𝑙𝑖𝑓𝑒 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑙𝑜𝑜𝑘𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡𝑜 𝑒𝑥𝑝𝑙𝑜𝑟𝑒, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑤ℎ𝑎𝑡 𝑐ℎ𝑎𝑛𝑔𝑒𝑠 𝑑𝑜 𝑦𝑜𝑢 𝑤𝑎𝑛𝑡 𝑡𝑜 𝑠𝑒𝑒?

You're then taken through a process of grading your state, mental, physical, and emotional. How do you feel about your social life, your love life, and how do you speak to yourself with your inner voice? At the end of the journal, you're asked the same set of questions and asked to grade the answers again. This gives you a measure of how far you've come and the progress you've made. And the journal is a record of how you made those changes each day.

"Great things are done by a series of small things brought together." ~ Vincent Van Gogh

Do you feel overwhelmed by your day? Swamped by the tasks you feel you have to perform? Anxious about your duties and responsibilities? Crowded by the people constantly coming to you for 'things'?

Did you know journaling can help you get a handle on these feelings and many other aspects of your life too? Journaling helps you break down your day into bite-sized chunks, so you can see which elements are necessary, which can be changed, and which can be handled differently. It helps you take back control over your day and your life so you can stop feeling overwhelmed and less anxious. You start to see what is important, what is essential, and what elements are simply dragging you down.

Journalise journals help you take the small steps to regain control of the big picture.

Do you have a load of stuff going on in your head, and you can't find a way of letting it out? Instead, it all goes around and around in your head, pulling you down and consuming your energy and time, affecting your mood, relationships, and life.

Men, especially, are conditioned to 'be strong', told from an early age that 'boys don't cry'. Men are taught not to show emotion and not to be sentimental.

"Women typically form deep, lasting friendships with each other but mostly, men form more transient relationships usually based around a sport or activity. It's hardly surprising men find it hard to talk about their emotions or admit when they're struggling with aspects of their lives when they've had this damaging narrative from boyhood. It's time to change that." - Mark Morton, Founder, Journalise.

If talking about your feelings is too far, journaling is an excellent place to start. Write it down, following our guided format, and start to explore your emotions in a way that will help you make sense of them.

Give it a try.

"Destroy the idea that you have to be constantly working or grinding to be successful.
Embrace the concept that rest, recovery & reflection are essential to progress towards a successful and happy life."

Journaling helps you prepare and plan your day. What are the things you are grateful for? What are you going to do today to care for your mental health? At the end of the day, journaling helps you reflect on how the day went. Did you achieve what you set out to do? Was it a good or bad day? What went well, and what didn’t go so well?

You can then decide what you'll do the same tomorrow and what you might want to do differently to feel happier, more fulfilled, and mentally resilient.

What you repeatedly do ultimately forms the person you are, what you believe, and your overall personality. Your mood, physical health, and level of success are affected and driven by your habits. Your overall mental health is, therefore, intrinsically linked to your habits.

You can't change habits if you don't know they are habits. You can only change what you know. Journaling is an excellent way of documenting your habits so you can discover them through visual representation. You can then make a connection between those habits and how they impact your thoughts and feelings.

You can read more about this in our article: Transform Your Habits For Better Mental Health Self-Care.
