On world kindness day how can you show a little love and kindness?

Kindness comes for free whether we are showing it to ourselves, someone else or our environment around us.

Nature has the greatest kindness, it constantly wants to live, share, surviveโ€ฆ and being in nature is one of the greatest kindnesses we can give ourselves to just slow down, listen, rest and regenerate.

The theme for 2025 is 'Hand in Hand for Better Foods and a Better Future' - which gives us a chance to consider access to and availability of food, and to not take this for granted. So please think carefully about the food you purchase, reuse as leftovers and ultimately waste.

This is timely as I have had a realisation! I have not been wasting food at all, I have been over eating it. Do you find when you are in a place of uncertainty or change that you turn to something else for comfort? Well for me, one of those things has been food. I have been exhausted so food provides the energy, but it also is a treat and something to look forward to in your day to break things up, plus it is also a way to numb uncomfortable feelings.

In addition, when we have a feeling of not being grounded and without routine, we all know this is a receipe to eat for convenience. However routine and preparation plays such an important role in eating a healthy and balanced diet and incorporating exercise into your daily routine.

Most of this year, this has gone out of the window for me and has lead to being more sedentary, not getting exercise by the outdoor activities I love and also eating the wrong things and too much of them!

This is a great wake up call, along with studying a health and nutrition course that has enabled me to reflect a lot basic facts, of energy (calories) consumed versus energy burned and run the numbers that tells me I am very much sitting in the overweight category.

I have always refused to weigh myself my whole life, but I am now looking at myself as a project and utilising all of the tools around me (not just calorie counting). But looking at BMI, height/waist measurement, weight, energy balancing, routine, activty and exercise, supplements, knowledge of foods, healthy eating and nutritional value.

Time to make changes all round - let's not waste food inside or outside of our bodies!

Sound has played a bigger part of my life than I realisedโ€ฆ

๐ŸŒŸ As a child, I didnโ€™t talk until late, as I was so active, I didnโ€™t need to ask for things, I did it myself
๐ŸŒŸ So I had to go to speech therapy, when there wasnโ€™t actually anything wrong with me
๐ŸŒŸ I played the clarinet growing up, did my grades and learned the science of music
๐ŸŒŸ I loved playing in an orchestra, for me, sound was being a part of the whole, not a solo activity
๐ŸŒŸ Music and sound has always been an emotional experience, it connects me to memories and therefore emotions
๐ŸŒŸ When Iโ€™m feeling emotional I can not listen to music or sing along as it instantly brings me to tears and an emotional release

Perhaps sound has always been my secret weapon, I never thought it was my thing as I wasnโ€™t a natural singer, although I had a loud and powerful voice!
I had to learn the technique of music through playing an instrument but it always struck a deep chord and I felt belonged when I was amongst and immersed in the sound in a band or orchestra.

Despite being in my own healing journey and then training as a yoga teacher and coach and hypnosis practitioner. I had thought sound healing was not my natural place, but itโ€™s been calling meโ€ฆ and now it feels like it was always meant to be. I feel an incredible sense of calm and purpose when playing the crystal bowls and combing with intention, meditation and relaxation.

I love shopping!

I have the admit it, I just doโ€ฆ it gives me a thrill!

A couple of years ago I made a commitment that I wouldnโ€™t buy anything new that wasnโ€™t sustainable, for an entire year.
It was very successful as it meant I had to slow down my spending, and be really conscious about my choices and research the materials, process and ethics behind every item and company.

As it happens my career in film has lead me to step into new roles as sustainability consultant on various productions.

Iโ€™ve found it a very interesting journey from my previous roles in the Production Dept. Sustainabilty is an interesting topic to bring to others, Iโ€™ve found itโ€™s one thing acting in line with your own values and priorities, but when you are trying to ask 100s of people to share the same. Especially when they are stressed, busy, under pressure for time and budget, it can be really hard to make sustainability at the forefront of their minds too.

However in this role and because itโ€™s something I care about, I am constantly learning about new tech, materials, processes that are being developed and new products that are available.

Andโ€ฆ I am pleasantly surprised to learn that in terms of my first love, shopping, Sustainable conscious consumers are on the rise, and make up 22% of shoppers world wide!

Demand for products that are listed are โ€˜sustainableโ€™ have doubled, with 48% of people more likely to take companyโ€™s environmental record into account when deciding whether to recommend a product to a friend or family. What items could you swap out for a more sustainable purchase?

Today is World Mental Health Day, which promotes the importance, awareness and acceptance of good Mental Health.

Many workplaces are trying hard to promote this, and my experience in the film industry can be one of stress, pressure, anxiety and burnout which can lead to poor mental health. For me I was very successful as the 'swan', where I was able to present myself with an external clam, under control, professional, reliable persona. And underneath no one could see how quickly the feet were moving and the engine running at high frequency to keep myself going.

This in effect, was my nervous system in overdrive; overworked with cortisol to power through, and in high alert with peaks of adrenaline, to keep me reacting and taking action. When all it really needed was to be calmed, held and rested.

I have learnt that to sustain our health and career we must take a moment to notice what we need to do, to look after ourselves better.

NOTICE

Simply just noticing is the first step.

STOP

Take 5 deep slow breaths, and ask what am I feeling right now, where am I feeling it and what do I need instead?

At times when you might feel at your worst physically, it is good to remember that doesn't represent the whole of you. We can look past the tiredness, imperfections, puffiness, poor skin, bags under eyes and general mess (well that is what I can see!), and know there is far more beauty underneath.

To see this (especially in ourselves) it is important to remember self-love, self-acceptance and appreciation are critical. This is a practice we need to actively choose to do daily, it doesn't come naturally without practice but it is so important to recognise our other beauties, strengths, power and creativity.

On this very windy autumn day in the picture, I was feeling all of the worst things about myself and my appearance, so I am sharing this photo as a practice for myself of self-love and self-acecptance at a time I really wasn't feeling it.

An estimated 17% of food is wasted after arriving at shops, restaurants and households, as hundreds of millions of people face hunger and food insecurity every year.

What excuses are you making?

Today is ๐—ก๐—ผ ๐—˜๐˜…๐—ฐ๐˜‚๐˜€๐—ฒ๐˜€ ๐——๐—ฎ๐˜†, a time to get really honest with yourself about the excuses you are living by.

Itโ€™s ok, we all make excuses as they keep us safe but they can also keep us stuck, or not fulfilling our potential. We all do it and sometimes donโ€™t even know, but this is why we need to get REALLY honest with ourselves.

So is today the day to change that?

If I'm being honest, Iโ€™m telling myself right now that my life is so busy and chaotic that I canโ€™t get into a regularly healthy routine in terms of exercise, meals and ensuring the supplements I need.

But that is a great excuse, yes my life is busy and chaotic, and finding consistency is hard at the moment, but if I really wanted to and it was important enough, I could plan better and improve this area of my life.
