Our next Bone Screening Event is this week, in collaboration with Screen My Bones at OsteoStrong in Tunbridge Wells.
If you don't know your bone strength, this is a golden opportunity to book an Echolite REMS Scan and know your bone health.
What is an Echolite REMS Scan?
An Echolight REMS scan is a type of bone health assessment.
REMS (Radiofrequency Echographic Multi Spectrometry) is a technology developed by Echolight Medical that uses ultrasound waves (not X-rays) to evaluate bone density and bone quality.
Here are the key points:
✅ Radiation-free: Unlike DEXA scans (the current gold standard for osteoporosis diagnosis), REMS uses ultrasound, so there is no exposure to ionising radiation.
✅ Bone density & quality: It measures both bone mineral density (BMD) and bone microarchitecture (quality), which together give a clearer picture of fracture risk.
✅ Areas tested: It typically measures the lumbar spine and femoral neck, the most common sites for osteoporosis assessment.
✅ Clinical use: REMS is CE-marked and recognised in Europe for diagnosing osteoporosis and assessing fracture risk. It is increasingly being used in clinics as a safer, easier alternative to DEXA, especially for repeated monitoring.
Why is this important?
A REMS scan is important for longevity because bone health is directly linked to how well and how long we live.
Fracture risk and independence: Low bone density (osteopenia or osteoporosis) greatly increases the risk of fractures, especially hip fractures. A hip fracture in later life is one of the strongest predictors of loss of independence and even premature death.
Early detection: REMS scans can spot changes in bone density and quality early, often before a fracture happens. Early intervention means you can strengthen bones, muscles, and balance before problems arise.
Radiation-free monitoring: Because it uses no X-rays, it can be repeated often to track progress safely over time. This allows for proactive management, not just reacting after a fracture.
Each scan comes with a detailed report, and ongoing personalised guidance for lifelong bone health.
Remember, bone health is a lifelong pursuit, starting in your 30's. The sooner you start measuring it, the sooner you can start managing it.
