How long will it take for me to get over this?

This is the question I’m most asked by grieving clients. The frustrating truth is that there is no timetable for grief. Everyone grieves differently, so try to be patient with yourself. It will soften and change given time, As for ‘getting over it’, while I’m not the biggest fan of the ‘Stages of Grief’, I think this quote by Kubler-Ross and Kessler captures the essence of the grieving process wonderfully. The truth is that we don’t ‘get over’ the loss of a loved one because, well, we loved them. What we do is rebuild our lives around the loss. We will be whole again, but we’ll never be the same again.

How has grief changed you?

I’m so pleased to be able to wear this beautiful pin from today. As therapists, I think it’s vital we educate ourselves on the impact of baby loss. It affects so many of us in our lifetime, yet many suffer in silence or face awkwardness and badly thought out comments from others. Let’s make sure this isn’t the case in the counselling room.

There have been so many brilliant talks on Instagram this week - in particular I’ve enjoyed the week of programmes organised by .infertile.midwife. There’s a wealth of fantastic information out there - I’d urge you to get involved.

An article that I wrote for Counselling Directory recently. Don’t underestimate the importance of self-care. You can’t pour from an empty cup.

While we are grieving, it becomes even more important to show ourselves compassion....

Following my last post on anger, a good friend and fellow counsellor sent me this great image which I thought would be worth sharing.

What is your anger trying to communicate to you? What’s underneath the tip of the iceberg?

A lovely quote about anger and grief. A completely normal part of the process but potentially a destructive one if not channeled into something constructive.

I do love ’s package of techniques to discharge anger:

- ten minutes journaling
- twenty minutes exercise (the actual quote is ‘running’, but as I haven’t run anywhere myself in over twenty years, I feel it would be hypocritical to suggest this myself!)
- ten minutes meditating
- twenty minutes watching something funny

I do wish I had come across this earlier when the entire world found it’s way onto my sh*tlist...😉
