Phew. Have you survived the Black Friday madness? 🙈
It’s always bothered me how we jump straight from a mindful, grateful Thanksgiving into a weekend of impulse buying and overconsumption.
One day we’re thankful for what we already have.
The next we’re hit with:
⚡ FLASH SALE
⏳ LAST CHANCE
🚨 ONLY HOURS LEFT
And deep down, we know we’re being played. These tactics are built to trigger FOMO and override our better judgment.
Behind the “fun” of it, the impact of this one weekend is huge:
🚨Black Friday deliveries generate a massive spike in CO₂ and waste in just a few days – much of it from packaging and rapid shipping.
🚨A shocking share of purchases are used once or never used at all before ending up forgotten, binned or “decluttered”.
🚨Around a third of online orders are returned – and many returns are destroyed or landfilled because it’s cheaper than processing and reselling them.
The message is always:
‼️Get it now, this won’t last.
Well, guess what – not only will it last, it will last for years, even centuries, in our oceans, our soil and our landfills. 🌊
As a founder of a responsible brand, I can’t ignore that. At Spruce, we’ve chosen not to play the Black Friday flash-deal game. No panic discounts. No sales “threats”. Our work is about reducing mindless consumption, not feeding it.
If you’re feeling the whiplash from gratitude to “buy now”, you’re not alone. You’re allowed to:
✅ Opt out of the noise
✅ Buy less, choose better
✅ Support small businesses whose values you’d be proud to explain to your kids.
