Our current core values edition explores non-clinical skills practitioners gain through experience and how they shape patient care and wellbeing.

To learn more, we asked optical professionals to share one value that guides their work.

From honesty to integrity, a wide range of values were shared, each personal and equally important.

Thanks to everyone who contributed: Ankur Trivedi, Nichola Mason, Rebecca Thompson, Nick Hagan, Dr Pretty Basra, and Jaimini Pattni.

What would you do you do if you received a notification from the GOC about a fitness to practise case? Scott Shadbolt, head of professional discipline at the Association of Optometrists shares three steps for members to take.

1️⃣ Don’t panic
It is understandably worrying to receive a letter from the GOC informing you of an investigation. Part of this is the concern that an investigation being opened results in serious and significant sanctions. In reality, the majority of cases are closed without a formal hearing and, of those which proceed to a hearing, relatively few result in the sort of outcomes that come to mind immediately.

2️⃣ Contact the AOP
Although such letters can suggest that an immediate response is required and that you personally must provide information, you can be represented by the AOP for those elements. If you respond directly to the GOC without any input from the AOP, it may lead to issues being caused further down the line.

3️⃣ Seek support
Often being under investigation can feel like an isolating experience. The immediate option is to speak to your legal representative at the AOP. The AOP also has the Peer Support Line, which can be used to contact peers who are aware of the pressures of professional optical practice.
