Resting Reef

Resting Reef An award-winning death-care service that turns the ashes of those who have died, into beautiful memorial reefs.

Resting Reef is a death care startup that redefines how we honour loved ones through an environmentally conscious memorial service. Founded by graduates from the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London, Aura Murillo and Louise Skajem, the sustainable venture transforms cremated ashes into living ocean reefs that regenerate marine ecosystems. By turning loss into life, Resting Reef aims to tackle several issues at once: redefine traditions with an ocean “cemetery” that restores marine biodiversity, sequesters carbon and prevents coastal erosion—creating a lasting tribute that benefits our oceans and future generations. The team at Resting Reef has garnered significant recognition, including winning five Innovate UK grants, the Arts Foundation Fellowship Award, a D&AD Pencil for Creative Excellence and the Seoul Design Award. Resting Reef has been featured in Fast Company, Wallpaper, The Telegraph, and showcased at events like the London Design Biennale and Dutch Design Week.

In just 12 months, our memorial reefs have transformed into thriving underwater ecosystems ✨

Our pilot monitoring programme shows that our memorials are a powerful sign of ecological recovery. The findings are clear:

🪸 Hard coral cover increased significantly, all through natural recruitment

🌿 Coralline algae is now building the foundation for long-term stability

🐚 Vibrant, complex benthic communities are developing on every structure

We’ll be sharing a full impact report soon, with all the data, insights, and stories behind this first year of restoration.

Stay tuned 💙

💌 Postcards of the Future is a series that reflects on the future of death care, nature restoration, and the vision behind Resting Reef.

For our sixth and last Postcard from the Future, we’re asking:

❇️ What if deathcare could tackle climate change? ❇️

Imagine a future where memorialisation supports global communities to reach sustainability targets.

Families often tell us that our reef memorials provide a reflective way to grieve together. Seeing a reef placed in the sea brings comfort, connection, and a sense of continuity.

Through memorial reefs, memory becomes a force for life, supporting coral growth, fish nurseries, and healthy oceans while helping families navigate grief.

Today, we invite you to explore our Experiential Reef service and how by creating a memorial, you can contribute to the ocean’s health 🪼

Today we want to share the Balinese rituals and traditions we honour as part of crafting and placing our reefs underwater at our active site in Bali. These ceremonies connect our work to the local culture, blessing each reef and weaving meaning into every stage of restoration.

➡️ Swipe to learn more about the beautiful rituals that guide and inspire this process! 🫀🪸
