An ectopic pregnancy is a serious medical condition that takes place when a fertilised egg implants outside the uterine cavity. The most common site for ectopic pregnancies is within the fallopian tubes. In the UK, this condition affects roughly 11 per 1,000 pregnancies.

Current guidance from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) stresses the importance of a rapid diagnosis and treatment plan to protect the health of the woman and her future fertility.

In the National Health Service (NHS), the 20-week scan is known as the anomaly scan or mid-pregnancy scan. This is a detailed check of your baby’s anatomy that takes place between 18 weeks and 20 weeks + 6 days. Its purpose is to look at your baby’s organs and bones, the placenta and cord, and the surrounding amniotic fluid.

The goal is to detect, support, and manage any important physical conditions early. It is a screening test, so it greatly improves the chances of spotting significant problems, but it cannot find every condition.

In most pregnancies, the mid-pregnancy scan is the most comprehensive scan before birth. Your healthcare provider will use set “views” to examine the following:

The Head and Brain
Face
Spine
Chest and Heart.
Abdomen
Kidneys and Bladder.
Limbs
The placenta.
