Next up in Alzheimers & Dementia Care Show programme to share is the Care Quality Commision and its work to improve dementia care. The “CQC” holds in-home care and care home to a good standard while advocating for users in national policy development. They support all populations relying on care support and have a focus on equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) which is important. Dementia doesn’t discriminate and every family matters but we’re not all supported equally. The CQC is prioritizing under-represented families as part of their current work and moving forward.

They want to hear from you if you have experiences of care, good or bad, and the impact care has made on you and your family. Visiting their website, you’ll find ways to communicate with them directly.

If you’re part of Dementia Compass, we can help you do this.

First up, Professor Martin Green who leads Care England. He’s highlighting the Steady Progress we’ve made over the last fifteen years to decrease the stigma, fear and isolation linked to dementia. Of course, he agrees that there is a lot more room for improvement and we agree. We know that assumptions are still being made that hold us back from living fully with a diagnosis and supporting those we love.

Here we are!

Over the next couple of days, we’re attending the Alzheimer’s & Dementia Care Show in London.
We’ll be catching up on resources, old and new. We promise to share along the way.

Feel free to check out the programme and prompt us with questions to ask. It’s small and accessible.

Exercise and physical activity can help us reduce our risk of dementia. They can also help us navigate dementia better.

Building strength is a fantastic benefit as we tend to be less active and risk becoming frail as we grow older and navigate complex conditions. It doesn't matter if you haven't exercised in awhile or never really got started, the benefits start immediately. Building strength is just one of the advantages, watch for more benefits in the coming posts. Meanwhile, tell us what you're doing now or planning to do to build strength.

A storm on Jupiter or a knot of wood on a table? Understanding how our brains access information (past memories) helps us to help individuals with a cognitive impairment like a dementia to focus on abilities over disabilities and thrive. Like when John spotted this on a table during choir and started explaining the sulfur, phosphorus and pressure involved in a storm like that. It didn’t make sense at first but we kept listening until we understood better what informs a physicist. -facing

Learning is something we’re all designed to do. We build on to our experiences in all sorts of dynamic ways. Social connections are a common way we share and build what we know, like at school, in work and through communal worship. Our Portals to the World museum programme is built on these connections with expert talks, Q&As, exploration and sharing. We have another session coming up in December. If you’re interested, do get in touch. -facing
