Exciting changes may be on the horizon for Oregon!
Oregon lawmakers are considering whether to empower children conceived from donor s***m, eggs or embryos to gain access to the names of the donors who made their existence possible, similar to the rights adopted children have to learn the identities of their birth parents.

Senate Bill 163 would require clinics that collect s***m, egg or embryo donations to ask for the names, birth dates, addresses, phone numbers, emails and medical histories of donors, which would then be entered into a state donor registry where the information would remain even if the clinics went out of business. When the children born from those donations turn 18, they would be entitled to access their donors’ information.

What happens when a gamete donor is contacted by their offspring? 27 American, Australian, and Canadian gamete donors share their experiences with a team of researchers in social anthropology and social work at the UQO | Université du Québec en Outaouais. The study's findings are summarized in this comic book and infographic:

The Contact project aims to examine situations in which a gamete donor is directly contacted by a donor offspring, whom they did not previously know. The study will help better understand the consequences of the progressive expansion of donor conceived people’s access to information about their or...

Last week, Dr. Diane Tober () testified to the United States senate committee on bill -224.

🎧 Hear Dr. Tober’s two-minute testimony in full here, based on data from her egg donor research, consisting of 300 egg donor interviews and 700 surveys, funded in part by the National Science Foundation.

The bill unanimously passed. Next: Bill goes to the CO senate appropriations committee. This represents an important step in the right direction for donor-conceived individuals and egg donors.

The act introduces provisions:

— Giving donor-conceived people the unconditional right/ability to learn the donor’s identity when they turn 18 and acquire non-identifying medical history before adulthood
— Set a 10-family limit on the number of families established per gamete donor
— Require banks and clinics to permanently maintain records and request medical updates from donors every three years
— Ensure donors and recipient parents are educated on the needs and interests of DCP before donating/receiving gametes
— Set a minimum eligibility age of 21 for gamete donors.
— Introduces a six-cycle limit for egg donors with the option to do a seventh with informed consent and only for a sibling cycle.

And this would only apply to clinics and banks in Colorado and any clinics and banks, even outside of Colorado, that provide gametes or egg donor services to Colorado residents. It would only apply to donations made after Jan 1, 2024.

NEWS: We Are Egg Donors collaborated with an online resource that examines international surrogacy arrangements called Surrogacy 360. WAED members created a video series on what egg donors want Intended Parents (IPs) to know.

Enormous gratitude for each WAED member who gave their voice to this project, since donor perspectives are often invisiblized- or treated as silent partners - in the fertility industry. Together as a community we can advocate for better standards for donors.

Journalist Alison Motluk describes the project here:

There are ways intended parents can look out for their donors. Here are a few. Years ago, I had the chance to accompany an egg donor to her retrieval. I drove with her to the early morning appointment, I waited with her as the sedation kicked in, I watched as the eggs were plucked out and counted, a...

We partnered with Center for Genetics and Society to create a video series that shows different perspectives of egg donors.

“What can I do to support the health of egg donors?” is a common question asked by Intended Parents (IPs). In this video series, we asked egg providers (donors) to share their personal stories abou…
