***PRESS RELEASE***

ALTON PARISH MEETING ON KING’S POND, 15 DECEMBER

A group of residents has called a “Parish Meeting” to discuss King’s Pond on Monday 15 December, at 6pm in Alton Community Centre. While the meeting is being arranged by Alton Town Council, it is not a council meeting, under rules set out in the Local Government Act 1972. The meeting will be open to the public. Only those on the Electoral Register for Alton and Holybourne will be able to vote on anything that is proposed at the meeting.

The main item of business is a discussion on whether to call for a “Parish Poll” (similar to a referendum) on King’s Pond and, if residents want to do this, what the question will be. If the meeting agrees on a question, East Hampshire District Council must run the poll in January, with the estimated £10,000 cost being charged to Alton Town Council. The law makes clear that the result of the poll is for the Town Council to consider and is not binding.

As each attendee will be checked when they arrive to see if they are on the Electoral Register and they will be given a voting card, there may be a slight delay to the start of the meeting.

The next Alton Town Council meeting is on 10 December in the Assembly Rooms at 7pm. The agenda is due to include an update on the King’s Pond project.

Are you free between 3pm - 7pm and would be happy to dress up as an elf and help Father Christmas?

If so, please contact Alton Town Council on 01420 83986 or email Natalie at community@alton.gov.uk

My background story

I have lived and worked in the Alton area since 1971. I am proud to have served in my local community setting up Alton Toy Library and helping to set up Alton pregnancy crisis counselling service which I helped with for over 5 years. I have continued to serve as a volunteer in Stepping Stones Friday and as well as being a qualified Social Worker I am also a qualified pre School playgroup leader. I have also worked as an LSA at Treloar college and school before leaving to set up my own photography business. I am an active member of the Alton Society and member of the Sustainability team. I care passionately about Alton and our environment. As a Green Liberal Democrat I will work hard to promote and protect our lovely town. I also care passionately about access to Education and a level playing field for all regardless of disability , as a carer to an adult son with Aspergers syndrome I fully understand the importance of help early on which is why I fully support Bushyleaze children's centre . I have also been campaigning since 2014 to protect the unique and rare chalk downland meadows on the former Treloar hospital site.I initiated and set up in November 2018 Altons first Anxiety cafe in conjunction with Austens cafe which has now been given county recognition. I am now working with the team at The George on providing an anxiety safe space pub . I am a wife and mother to 4 children and several grandchildren. I am proud to be given the opportunity to stand for my town as a Town and District Councillor for Whitedown where I live.
