The Style and Wellbeing Consultancy

The Style and Wellbeing Consultancy The Style and Wellbeing Consultancy is run by Dr Dion Terrelonge, a chartered psychologist and trained stylist.

It provides individuals of all ages, genders, identifications and sizes, with a more holistic alternative to traditional styling services. The consultancy is founded on the premise that people seek change for a reason, and as well as offering styling advice we acknowledge and work through that reason. Clothing is integral to our sense of selves and expression of those selves, and it is the consultancy's mission to support that expression and break down any barriers to it. So, whether you lack confidence, knowledge of fashion, time, worry about social expectations and biases, or just plain dislike shopping, the Style and Wellbeing Consultancy offers a guiding hand and a listening ear. Here at the Style and Wellbeing Consultancy you have the chance to discuss and explore your goals, wants and drives, and get hands on styling advice and support through the often daunting world of fashion and life.

You know what's a good idea? Popping out and buying a copy of not only because I make a little feature but also just because it's fab and def ticks a self-care box.
(Maybe buy a copy then share it with a friend โ™ป๏ธ)

I spoke with about clothing and mood for this piece in issue 43 on Dressing the Part, and as we lurch through betwixtmas into the coming new year I'm thinking about how I can support more people in harnessing the power of clothing and using it to our advantage e.g. putting a smile on our faces on grim days

There's so much that's out of our control at the moment, but feeling good in what we wear can be a small but easy win

New job, who dis?

Today marks my very first day as a lecturer in psychology for University of Arts, London College of Fashion.

I am sooo excited for this new challenge and the opportunity to share with, think with and develop future generations of fashion psychologists.

It's been a long term goal of mine to work with , the only institution in the world to have two BPS accredited psychology in fashion higher education courses.

Who knows, maybe one day I'll be listed as a notable person on UAL's wiki along with Rachel Stevens!
(Post dedicated to my late father who supported my dream even though he had no clue what a fashion psychologist was ๐Ÿ˜˜)

All the recent conversations about the Metropolitan Police following their response to the Sarah Everard vigil and potential changes in policing powers reminded me of a study.

Two US based psychologists conducted an experiment looking at the interplay between enclothed cognition (when we take on traits and behaviours associated with certain items of clothes) and power induced tendencies. In this case the power came from the wearing of a Police uniform.

Participants were randomly allocated into a uniform or non-uniform condition and asked to complete a first-person shooter video game.

Those wearing a Police uniform were more likely to approach and shoot unarmed targets than those in the non-uniform condition. The likelihood of shooting an unarmed target was moderated a little by the beliefs of the participant. Those who didn't see justification in the misuse of Police power were less likely to shoot than those who saw justification in it.

Although this study was conducted in the US it raises questions about the power of such institutions, the perceptions of those who serve, recruitment and public perception.

Each time I contribute to a magazine article, newspaper piece, podcast, radio show or whatever, I learn something new. You may be brought on board to give "expert" opinion or advice (if there even is such a thing), but you also end up learning so much. This time was no different when supporting on her piece for about role and place of fashion in politics.
Did you guys know that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez wore all white when she was sworn into Congress, partly as a nod to Shirley Chisolm, who was the first black woman elected to Congress, and a nod to the Suffragettes? No. Neither did I. Or that according to fashion historian
(Who has a very scroll-worthy page) that one of the earliest examples of political fashion was seen during the French revolution when supporters of the revolution wore red, white and blue striped rosettes?

Clothes can be powerful signifiers and used to honour and remember those who have paved the way for us.

When I see someone with such authentic individual style it stops me in my tracks
boldly and confidently strutting through Victoria Park like it was his own private runway made my morning (because it certainly wasn't my poor excuse for a jog) and reminded about the importance of wearing your happy and not being afraid to have fun with fashion.

When contacted me a few months back to ask if I could contribute to a article on why, when she was generally so comfortable in her day to day style was she finding it hard to choose a wedding dress, I was intrigued as to what was going on for her.

While many might think, big deal, brides often find picking the "right" dress tricky, Layla had an extra level of complexity. She found herself trying to choose between two different traditional styles; a red dress in keeping with her Pakistani heritage or white in keeping with her Lebanese side and British culture.

This was so much more than picking a dress; this was trying to marry up the different parts of herself, this was reconsidering her identity and what this may mean on a day as momentous as her wedding, not only for her and her groom, but the families, as well as her and sense of self.

Met these two gorgeous gals there, also checking out the installation and figured they'd make a much better picture than me in my running gear; plus the style ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพ

This is just what
(Former LCF Fashion Psychology course director) and I were discussing when thinking about diversity in the staff teams and students on fashion psychology courses.

My theory is that risk plays a big part in the courses people choose. Fashion psychology is not yet an area with a clear career path (which is slowly changing), therefore may be more appealing to those where financial security is not a pressing concern. It's easier to take risks when you have a safety net.

Creative professions differ from their vocational counterparts, where more often there are clear set job roles offering security. It is within the vocational sectors that we see more working class and people of BME backgrounds.

The trope of you can't be what you can't see still stands as well as considering the impact of the culture of unpaid internships that only few can afford to take and benefit from within creative industries.

I've been asked a few times now to recommend some sustainable fashion brands, but quickly realised that besides the couple I knew of, I wasn't aware of the range out there. Of course, upcycling, mending and generally making do is the best way to engage with sustainable fashion but where do you go when you need a few new bits, and in particular work wear?

So I decided to do a little research (with a small R) and after trowling through what the internet had to offer, I've narrowed these six down as my favourites. Not only because of their green credentials but because of the additional work they do; like who work towards tackling poverty by employing women in need and who don't over produce, but make clothes based on demand.
