Today's Daily Nugget is all about Vitamin A. It's one of those ones we hear a bit about (something called pro-Vitamin A that gets added to skin/hair products?) but what is is, why do we need and it and how can we easily incorporate it into our diet?
So - in short:
1) Vitamin A is vital for the physical health of your eyes & to maintain good vision (its other name is retinol). It's also a big part of cell growth (hence the skin/hair connection, but also reproductive and bone health) and immune strength (think mucous membranes / natural defence).
2) It's fat soluble, so mostly found in organ meats, oily fish, dairy products and eggs
3) The good news is that your body can make Vitamin A with beta-carotene, which you find in brightly coloured fruit & veg such as pumpkin, squash , sweet potatoes, carrots, peppers, melon & mango, and also greens such as kale, spinach and broccoli.
4) This conversion happens using a specific enzyme in the small intestine, so all you he to do is eat the veg!
Easy! especially as this time of the year with all those pumpkins smashing about...
