The Four Main Types of Bones
The human skeleton is made up of 206 bones, each with a unique shape and function. These bones are classified into four main types that work together to support movement and protect vital organs.
1. Long Bones
Long bones are longer than they are wide and are essential for movement and support.
📌 Examples: Femur, tibia, humerus
🧠 Function: Act as levers, help with walking, running, and lifting.
2. Short Bones
Short bones are roughly cube-shaped and provide stability with limited movement.
📌 Examples: Carpals (wrist), tarsals (ankle)
🧠 Function: Absorb shock and support complex motions.
3. Flat Bones
Flat bones are thin and curved, designed mainly for protection.
📌 Examples: Skull bones, ribs, sternum, scapula
🧠 Function: Protect vital organs like the brain, heart, and lungs.
4. Irregular Bones
Irregular bones have complex shapes that don’t fit into other categories.
📌 Examples: Vertebrae, facial bones
🧠 Function: Protect the spinal cord and provide attachment points for muscles.
✨ Every bone has a purpose—together they form the framework that keeps us moving and protected.
