Meet Our London Marathon Runners: John

🙌 Meet John Barneby FRSA , the leader of our Education work, who is running the TCS London Marathon this year!

We thought it would be fun to ask John why he's running for Oasis and share some of his marathon tips.

😊 Tell us a little about yourself.

Hi, I’m John Barneby, CEO of Oasis Community Learning. I live in Hampshire but spend my time travelling across the country, visiting and serving our academies and communities. Being in our academies meeting our amazing students and remarkable people always energises me.

👟🏃 What keeps you going on the days you really don’t want to run?

I picture the young people in our communities—their resilience, determination and hope. If they can push through enormous challenges every single day, I can manage a long run! And if I’m honest, the thought of Johnny, Michael and Francesca (my friends who are also running) and seeing my Strava go silent is also highly motivating. Who doesn’t love a bit of friendly competition!

🎽What’s one thing you wish supporters knew about marathon training?

That it is less about the big heroic long runs and more about consistently showing up—on the cold mornings, the tired evenings, and the days when every part of you wants a sit-down instead. It’s a long lesson in hope and perseverance … which feels very Oasis!

🥯🍌What’s your pre-marathon breakfast?

A bagel with peanut butter and a banana.

🌟 What does Oasis mean to you?

Last week, we hosted our London and South East Regional Forum at Oasis St Martin's Village. Our community forums are all about coming together as local communities, sharing our voices, and taking action to create change.

The theme for this year was Faith, Tradition & Christ-Centredness, which allowed us to explore how faith shapes our mission to build communities where there is no one left out.

Here’s what some of our community members, students, and staff had to say about what Oasis means to them 📝.

💬 We’d love to hear from you too — what does Oasis mean to you? Let us know in the comments!

🌟 Testimonial Spotlight: Jesse’s Journey at the Oasis Bike Barn 🌟

The Oasis Bike Barn at Oasis South Grimsby is more than a place to repair bikes — it’s a space where young people discover new skills, confidence, and a sense of belonging. Jesse’s story shows just how powerful that can be:

"My name is Jesse - I am 15 years of age and have been attending the Oasis Community Space since leaving education in September 2025. I attend every Friday. Since leaving education I have built up skills with Barry and the team on repairing bikes. I can change tyres, look over general maintenance of a bike, I have re-spoked a wheel, can change handlebars and lots more. Not only have I learnt to repair bikes, but I have also engaged with the local community on the South Ward and have been empowered by the team at Oasis to take on more responsibility by tracking data using the I pad.

My self-confidence has grown and not only have I learnt bike repair skills but also life skills in dealing with people. Oasis welcomed me from the very first day I attended and I love being a part of the Oasis family."

Jesse’s experience is a reminder that when young people are given support, trust, and the chance to shine, incredible things happen. Together, we can build stronger communities where no one is left out — and every young person knkows they belong.

Farming is therapy. 🌿🐐

Children’s mental health matters — and places like Oasis Southampton City Farm make all the difference.

Here’s a powerful testimonial from one of our young people who helps out at the farm.

"The first time I went to the farm I was very shy and wasn’t very confident but everyone there was so kind and friendly and made me feel like I belonged.

I used to always were ear defenders because I don’t like loud noises and they made me feel safe but about two months in to going to the farm I felt able to go without them this was a big deal for me ! I felt comfortable without them! The animals there are amazing. I love them all so much I have also learnt a lot about them for example blue tongue skinks love warm baths and it helps them shed! Going to the farm is always the highlight of my week.

The farm has changed my life from feeling sad and shy to confident and happy and because of how much the farm has helped me and my mental health I am now in school full time which at the start of my journey I could never have imagined.

One person in particular, Hannah, has made such a positive impact on my life. She has never judged me and even on my bad days makes me feel happy, important and safe. Thank you"

❤️ Therapeutic spaces don’t always look like clinics or classrooms. Sometimes they look like muddy boots, animal feed buckets, warm smiles, and a community that won’t give up on you.

This shouldn't happen.

⭐ Become a community champion ⭐

When Mila fled the war in Ukraine with her daughter Yeva, they arrived in the UK frightened, disorientated, and unsure where to begin. With limited English and the trauma of conflict, Mila felt lost.

But through local community programmes at Oasis Britwell, she and Yeva slowly found hope and a sense of belonging. Eager to give back, Mila volunteered weekly at the hub while taking online English classes. Although highly qualified in Ukraine, she had to start again, showing incredible determination. Eventually, she secured a part‑time kitchen role. Mila now supports other women in the community and volunteers at local churches while Yeva expresses her creative gifts, dancing and making art in the hub.

Mila and Yeva’s story is just snapshot of the work we do across the country everyday building belonging and ensuring there is no one left out.

Could you become a community champion by donating today to make sure that every family gets the support they need? Our work would not be possible without your generosity. Thank you!

Did you know that halving low wellbeing in the UK could save an estimated £54 billion every year?

Oasis “Young Influencers” from Oasis Academy Coulsdon recently visited Parliament to hand in a petition with 4,300 signatures calling on Government to establish an annual national measure of children’s wellbeing. Because without consistent national data, we can’t see the real drivers behind declining wellbeing—or take the right action to change it.

Joanne and Eirini, two of the students working with Oasis and partners The Children's Society for this campaign, said: “This campaign will positively impact and benefit the wellbeing of children in the future. It promotes our key principles focusing on youth wellbeing. This is incredibly important due to the pervasive issues surrounding the mental health of children lately.

The government has the right tools and support to positively collaborate with us in ensuring that children in the UK, and hopefully globally, can thrive now and in the future. This campaign has already begun to change lives, thanks to your help.”

If we want to halve knife crime, we need to double down on inclusion.

The government has announced that every child caught carrying a knife will receive tailored support to help them find a different path.

This is a positive step. Oasis hosted think tank, The Centre for Young Lives, has long called for greater support for young people affected by violence. With the right investment and care, this approach has real potential to change lives—and save them.
