ISHA - The Hip Preservation Society Our vision is to be the premier international society for education and research in hip preservation

ISHA – The Hip Preservation Society is an international organisation which is focused on hip preservation surgery to enhance patient care and outcomes, through the delivery of training, education, support of research, sharing of knowledge and best practice, fostering global collaboration and provision of patient and professional information to improve hip care. Our mission is to create “healthy hips” by bringing hip preservation, prevention and treatment to all people regardless of age, social status, gender or economic situation. Our vision is a world with equitable access to quality treatment and the best achievable patient outcomes through improved access to appropriate treatment, early intervention, prevention and education, with the goal of us living in a world where hip joint replacement is only an occurrence of old age. ISHA’s purpose is to advance, enhance, and raise awareness of the field of hip preservation, to facilitate early intervention to improve patient outcomes.

Let’s look at Topic 2 for the ISHA 2026 Annual Scientific Meeting…

Labral pathology is central to hip stability and joint congruency, with hip preservation practice today spanning a spectrum from anatomic, knotless arthroscopic repair in viable tissue to technically demanding reconstruction for irreparable, calcified or deficient labra.

With the stated aim of bridging foundational principles and advanced techniques, the ISHA 2026 Annual Scientific Meeting represents the ideal forum for surgeons, physical therapists and researchers in the hip space to refine indications, share techniques and discuss when to repair, when to reconstruct, how to execute labral procedures optimally and how to rehabilitate after surgery.

Hip Cartilage Treatment Methods, From Microfractures to Biological Treatments: What Is the Future?

Dr. Jacek Mazek describes the current and future of hip cartilage treatment methods.

Microfractures:
• The most common method to treat cartilage lesions
• Quick and cost effective
• Recommended for lesions < 2cm2 and 2cm2 and >10mm from the rim in acetabulum
• Scaffolds : Membranes, gels, AutoCart
• Microfragmented adipose tissue transplantation (MATT)
• Full thickness chondral flap

We’d like to recognise several long-standing members whose dedication to ISHA and to advancing excellence in hip preservation has spanned many years...

Demonstrating a passion for conditions of the hip, Callum McBryde was awarded the first McMinn Scholarship from the British Hip Society, which supported doctoral research in hip resurfacing.

Mr McBryde undertook an international fellowship year in Sydney with Dr Solomon, a world expert in hip surgery. He also undertook fellowships across Europe and Australia, including in Zurich and Melbourne.

In his consultant role at The Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham, he leads a specialist practice in hip preservation, hip resurfacing and complex primary hip replacements.

He is actively involved in teaching and lecturing internationally, contributing to peer-reviewed research, and serving on editorial and registry boards related to hip surgery.

Mr McBryde is an active contributor to ISHA and ISHA meetings and has been a member since as early as 2013.

Thank you, Callum!

Technical Deep Dive: Labral Reconstruction / Augmentation

Dr. Andrew Wolff demonstrates refined techniques for performing labral reconstruction and labral augmentations.

Goals of Labral Treatment
• Eliminate damaged, pain generating tissue
• Optimize stability through restoration of a circumferential suction seal around femoral head

Tips on Labral Reconstruction/Augmentation
• Tailor to patient anatomy and pathology
• More commonly: Labral Augmentation on antero-inferior and postero-inferior with a complete Labral Reconstruction in between
• Good overlap between the graft and anchors on both ends behind labrum

Antero-inferior
• Anatomy is variable : hypoplastic, tearing extended to TAL, or often adhered to iliofemoral ligament

Postero-inferior
• Less dicey, unless ossified or coxa profunda; no psoas concern
• Anchor placement : as close as possible to the rim, place the anchor sequentially
• Graft Tensioning and Fixation : use atraumatic grasper through DALA portal for graft placement precisely on rim to ensure perfect tension and placement for each successive anchor

📢 Webinar - Femoral Malrotation and Hip Pain: What Does The Evidence Say?

🗓 Saturday, 21 February 2026.
⌚️ 09:00 – 10:30 AM Eastern Standard Time (EST) / 14:00 – 15:00 GMT/UTC.

This “Open Access” webinar will explore the recent surveys undertaken in exploring the relationship between this and the occurrence of hip pain.

Expert surgeons will provide an in-depth overview of the survey results and interpret what those mean for patients in post operative scenarios.

Fermoral Malrotation is a common but often unrecognised complication of femoral shaft fracture fixataion, occurring in 0%–28% of cases (up to 56% in some studies), usually requiring revision if >15∘–30. It causes rotational mismatch, gait alterations, and knee/hip pain, commonly managed with derotation osteotomy. Diagnosis involves CT, while prevention requires careful intraoperative monitoring.

Let’s look at Topic 1 for the ISHA 2026 Annual Scientific Meeting…

Under the ISHA 2026 Meeting Theme “From Roots to the Sky: Bridging Foundational Principles and Advanced Innovation in Hip Preservation”, there are 9 topics that have been selected by the Scientific Programme Committee to align with the interests of members and delegates.

Topic 1: Hip Instability, PAO & Femoral Osteotomies

Hip instability, PAO and femoral osteotomies is a key area of interest because it directly addresses the structural causes of pain, instability and early arthritis in young, active patients, with procedures having the potential to improve function and delay or prevent the need for THR.

This topic sits at the intersection of involving indications, refined surgical techniques and rapidly expanding outcomes data, with discussions to be had around who benefits most from PAO and femoral osteotomies, how best to plan and execute corrections, and how to integrate with nonoperative care and other surgical options.

Got a relevant study in the field of “Hip Instability, PAO & Femoral Osteotomies”?
