This week is World Antimicrobial Awareness Week 💊

Antibiotics are no longer routinely used to treat infections.

This is because:
- Many infections are caused by viruses, so antibiotics are not effective
- Antibiotics are often unlikely to speed up the healing process and can cause side effects
- The more antibiotics are used to treat trivial conditions, the more likely they are to become ineffective for treating more serious conditions

Both the NHS and health organisations across the world are trying to reduce the use of antibiotics, especially for health problems that are not serious.

The overuse of antibiotics in recent years means they’re becoming less effective and has led to the emergence of “superbugs”.

These are strains of bacteria that have developed resistance to many different types of antibiotics, including:

MRSA (methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus)
Clostridium difficile (C. diff)
the bacteria that cause multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis
These types of infections can be serious and challenging to treat, and are becoming an increasing cause of disability and death across the world.

The biggest worry is that new strains of bacteria may emerge that cannot be treated by any existing antibiotics.

🗓️ October Appointments 🗓️

We have seen a rise in unattended appointments in October as many patients didn’t attend for their pre-booked flu vaccination.

In October, 155 patients didn’t attend their appointment, totalling 20 hours of missed appointment time that could have been offered to other patients.

If you are unable to make your appointment please do let us know so that we can offer it to another patient. The quickest and easiest way to cancel is via the NHS app. Alternatively, you can contact us via our website: www.james-oriordan-medical-centre.nhs.uk If you are unable to access online services you can call us on 0203 904 3331.

We are supporting the Department of Health and Social Care and the NHS on a new campaign encouraging all adults to take the Healthy Choices Quiz. This health and wellbeing quiz aims to empower adults to take control of their health by making small changes day to day.

Taking around 5 minutes to complete, the quiz asks a series of questions about your lifestyle. You will then receive an overall score out of 10 and advice on how you are doing in each area. You’ll also receive personalised recommendations and a wealth of NHS resources including free apps to help you act where it’s most needed.

🤖 Meet Andi, our new Virtual Care Navigator!

From tomorrow, we will be trialling a new system called Andi, our Virtual Care Navigator, to help improve how we manage patient requests and phone calls.

Andi has been created by the same team behind Anima, which we already use for online triage.

💡What is Virtual Care Navigation?
When you call the surgery, instead of waiting in a call queue, you’ll speak to Andi, our automated system. Andi will take down your request and pass it on to the right team, helping us get you the care or information you need, faster and more efficiently.

✨ Benefits for patients:
- No more long call queues, especially at busy times like 8am ⏰
- Quick and easy way to submit your request
- Your query is sent straight to the right team

🩺 Benefits for the surgery:
- Frees up staff time to focus on patient care
- Helps us manage requests more efficiently
- Reduces waiting times and phone line pressure

👋🏻 A quick note:
Andi isn’t a robotic sounding voice - he sounds quite natural! This may feel a bit unusual at first, but rest assured, it’s just our automated system working hard behind the scenes to make things more efficient for everyone.

Cervical Screening invites are changing.

Please be aware that from 1st July, most women and people with a cervix aged 25-49 who test HPV negative will be invited every 5 years, instead of 3.

HPV is the cause of most cervical cancers. If HPV isn't found during your screening, the risk of developing cancer is low, so screening can be safely done every 5 years.
