Ace your way to a better back this Wimbledon!

I'm sure we have a few budding Norrie's or Raducanu's out there! If so, here are a few top tips to help you look after your back health, while getting you in the tennis season swing!

Get strong – Make sure your body is strong enough to cope with the impact of tennis. Good core strength as well as shoulder and arm strength will protect you from injury.

Warm up – The best way of warming up to tennis, is…. to play tennis. Go through steady rallies with your opponent playing at 50% intensity varying your shots and your court position.

Ease yourself into tennis life – If you are new to the world of tennis make sure you ease your body into each game, overexertion and fatigue is one of the most common causes of injury. So instead, play shorter matches to help build up your stamina.

Keep it loose – Make sure your clothing is loose and comfortable and provides support where required- especially for your feet! When playing a tennis game, you will be on your feet for long periods of time, so it is a good idea to pick the right pair of shoes for you.

Keep hydrated and energised – Along with Wimbledon fever often comes a British heatwave – so it’s a good idea to keep hydrated and have a bottle of by your side at all times. A sports drink will ensure that you have enough carbohydrates to endure that final tiebreak.

All about the court – Many people forget to think about the tennis court surface that they’re playing on and how it can affect them. Courts with hard surfaces and ‘no give’, such as cement, asphalt and synthetic courts are much harder on our knees so try and play on a ‘softer’ court if you experience problems with your knees.

Respect injuries – If you’re experiencing significant pain during or after playing, it’s time to get professional advice. This may not necessarily mean stopping playing, but just reducing your load and exposure as your body heals.

This week is breast feeding awareness week 2022. We'd love to share some great tips with you which might just help you on your breast feeding journey ....

1. Are you sitting comfortably?
Whether you are breastfeeding, bottle feeding, expressing breast milk, or a combination of these, the first few weeks and months will involve a lot of time sitting or laying down to feed your baby. Think about keeping your spine tall to avoid slouching, use cushions to support your back, relax your shoulders, and keep drinks and snacks nearby.
2. Is baby cuddled in close?
The closer your baby is to you, the easier and more comfortable they will be to hold for longer periods of time. Keep your centres of gravity close together. Feeding time can also be a great time to continue skin to skin, which helps both of you to relax and bond.
3. Have you swapped sides?
Not only will swapping sides give your arms and shoulders a bit of a rest, it is also a way for baby to learn to feed in slightly different positions.
4. Is baby’s head free to tip back?
Especially for breastfed babies it is important that they are able to tip their head back, as this allows them to open their mouth wide and get a good latch. Talk to your midwife, lactation consultant or local breastfeeding group if you would like more support with positioning and attaching your baby.

For those of you who didn't know, our receptionist, Amelia, is training to be a Chiropractor. here she shares a bit about her journey to Chiropractic ...

"Over the course of the past 3 years, I have worked at 2 chiropractic clinics while studying my Chiropractic degree.
After my first Chiropractic Assistant job, I realised I had a special interest in paediatric and pregnancy care and so
decided to work in a clinic more suited to my interests.
Working as a Chiropractic Assistant is a great experience for me. Every shift, I learn more and more about this
amazing profession and hear all sorts of amazing stories from patients about how they are getting on and how
much chiropractic has helped them. And the best part is I get to see lots of adorable babies!"
