It can be scary experiencing pain, particularly when it's a recurring injury. But what if I told you that recurring pain doesn't always mean you're consistently doing damage to your body? Following an event like an injury, sometimes our body is so keen to make sure we don't do it again, our nervous system will be extra sensitive and cause us pain even if we're not doing damage. Whilst frustrating for us, this is actually a really healthy response. The trick, as I've mentioned in another post, is to try and build up to regular activity gradually (this is called pacing). The key message I just want to communicate here is don't panic and think you've gone back a step and have hurt yourself again. This is most likely not the case. You just need to go a little slower. A great way to know whether you're doing too much is thinking about the pain scale. Try to do things that don't make you wince. Comfortably uncomfortable is what I like to say, which is no more than 4 on the pain scale. Give it a go and if you want advice please don't hesitate to get in touch.
