I had a rewarding experience, a couple of weeks ago, returning to the University of Leeds to speak to medical students about building a competitive Rheumatology CV.

It was a pleasure sharing practical tips and reflections from my own journey - from medical student to FY1 Doctor with an aim for Rheumatology.

I also covered ways to combine a specialty with other career interests to create a self-directed distinct and fulfilling career pathway.

Giving back to the community that trained me is incredibly important.

Thank you to Leeds Rheumatology Society for the invitation and for hosting such an engaged group.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of attending the Spondyloarthritis Academy 2025 at Emmanuel College, University of Cambridge .

It was an inspiring day filled with insights that deepened my passion for rheumatology as a future specialty.

One highlight for me was the thought‑provoking talk by Dr Jordan Tsigarides, exploring the role of digital technologies and AI innovations in rheumatology - a glimpse into how the specialty is evolving and why the future looks bright for patient care.

There was also an excellent selection of stalls showcasing the latest advances in pharmacological options for autoimmune and inflammatory conditions, alongside engaging talks from leading experts in the field.

Beyond the science, I had the chance to connect with some fantastic people who share this passion. I was grateful to meet and speak with Prof Karl Gaffney, one of the co-chairs and Director of Rheumatology Events.

Rheumatology truly is a fascinating and welcoming specialty - and I felt very much at home.

I look forward to joining more Rheumatology events in the future and to growing my journey in this exciting field.

Why I Chose to Work Less Than Full Time (LTFT) as an NHS Foundation Doctor 🗓️🩺

Becoming a doctor was never about a single mission for me. It’s part of a bigger vision - one that embraces versatility and harmony.

I work clinically 3 days a week.

There’s a rush in medicine to become a consultant as fast as possible, driven by prestige and ambition. I get it. But what’s the point of moving full throttle only to realise, hundreds of miles down the road, that you missed an important turn?

A medical career is long. You don’t lose anything by 'slowing down'. If anything, you gain more by integrating diverse interests instead of rushing down a single path.

The myth that you have to choose between clinical and non-clinical work? Just that - a myth. It’s not 'either/or', it’s 'and'.

We still need dedicated frontline clinicians, but the future belongs to integrated, hybrid and versatile doctors who blend passions without sacrificing clinical practice and excellence.

I’ve seen the downsides of moving full throttle first-hand - especially recently during bereavements. Integration offers more satisfaction, rest, richer experiences and, crucially, time to reflect. It reduces burnout and brings healthy variation to life.

Since embracing LTFT, my energy has been consistent, and reflection - deep and unrushed - comes naturally with space away from the clinical grind. Like muscle growth, it happens during recovery, not during the resistance.

Work-life integration beats the elusive 'work-life balance'. I don’t want to be known for just one thing. Versatility makes us irreplaceable. What if, one day, I lost the ability to do that one thing? LTFT helps me stay flexible, adaptable and human.

When I say I’m LTFT, some see me as an anomaly. For me, it’s how I thrive, not just survive.

'Doctor' goes far beyond clinical work.

I'm proud to practice medicine 'less than full time', but fully engaged. 🎯

Why I kept and keep on going (driven by purpose, fueled by adversity) 🎯🙏🏿🩺

Aged 10, I wanted to be a doctor. Along the way, I dreamed of being a footballer, a heavyweight champion boxer, even the President of Nigeria.

The root of it all was health, impact and legacy.

The road was anything but smooth:

🔵 Pre-medical school:

• Born prematurely, in intensive care for months.
• Never met any of my grandparents.
• Survived a near-fatal hit-and-run aged 14.
• Achieved CCE grades at A Levels.
• Faced rejection from medical school three times.

🔵 During medical school:

• Lost my 43-year-old uncle to an aggressive brain cancer. 💔
• Lost my first-born at 8 weeks old. 💔
• Repeated fourth year of medical school.

Yet, I kept asking: Why not me?

Whatever I had to go through - expected or unexpected - it didn't matter.

My eyes were fixed on the target.

Whatever the setback or obstacle.

Regardless of the time it would take.

Pushing past the immense resistance was worth it as painful as it was to go through.

Achievements mean nothing without a higher purpose - it's like a body without a spirit, it's dead.

That’s why behind my smiles is the story of faith in a calling bigger than myself.

Genuine smiles that acknowledge that the higher purpose pushed me, step by step, to endure to the very end and eventually make the breakthrough.

Smiles that acknowledge that I made the right choice by never throwing in the towel and getting back up during every ten count.

Last month, I became the first medical doctor in my bloodline.

So, my question to you is: Why not you? Why can't it be you?

First week as a doctor completed 🩺🫁✅

The first-day frown says it all - navigating the computer system (and lifts) was like solving a Rubik's Cube, but I pushed through (with some help) and hit some key milestones: clerked my first patient, handed over care, discussed a patient with another department, ordered tests/scans, delivered a scan result directly to a patient and updated job lists.

The team dynamics were on point, which helped manage workload well - divide and conquer.

I quickly earned a rep for always carrying around a 2.5L water bottle - people aren’t sure if it’s a dumbbell or a water cooler. It’s either in my hand or on the computer trolley. Maintaining both laser-focus and energy levels are a priority.

Commuting from London to Cambridge three days a week has been manageable. I am happy with my decision to do clinical work three days a week. I’ve optimised my schedule to meet fitness goals, spend quality time with family and friends and focus sufficiently on non-clinical activities and projects.

Feeling proud that what I learned in medical school is finally coming to life. Honoured to be here and ready for what this new week holds. 🙏🏿
