Scar patches operate through a multifaceted mechanism that supports the natural wound healing process while preventing abnormal scar formation. The core principle lies in their occlusive nature, which creates a semi-permeable barrier over the affected area. This barrier reduces transepidermal water loss (TEWL) and maintains optimal hydration levels in the stratum corneum. Adequate hydration is critical, as it softens the scar tissue, reduces local inflammation, and inhibits the overactivation of fibroblasts—cells responsible for collagen production. By downregulating excessive collagen synthesis and promoting balanced tissue remodeling, scar patches can help flatten hypertrophic and keloid scars, diminish redness, and improve elasticity and overall texture. Silicone-based patches, in particular, have been widely studied and are recommended by dermatologists due to their high biocompatibility and proven clinical efficacy.
