There are many factors which affect fertility, the ability to conceive and early pregnancy progress.

Cycle monitoring or mapping is the process of tracking the menstrual cycle, using advanced transvaginal ultrasound, to determine the timing and quality of ovulation. It involves several scans during a natural cycle to monitor the development of ovarian egg follicles and corresponding changes within the womb lining (endometrium) at important stages of the cycle. This provides a comprehensive assessment of key aspects essential to achieving a successful pregnancy.

Clinical Diagnostic Services is a highly respected ultrasound practice recognised worldwide particularly for its work in key areas of pregnancy, general gynaecology and reproductive medicine. It is headed by Mr Bill Smith who was awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours List last year in recognition of his work and contribution to ultrasound scanning in these areas. In view of the issues brought to light today, we are in complete agreement with comments relating to many “radiographers / sonographers” carrying out pregnancy scans, especially within the private sector.

We have consistently raised concerns in this respect for many years and as part of our current practice very frequently come across problems caused by poor ultrasound scanning.
We can only reinforce, in our opinion, that at present there is a lack of professional supervision of ultrasound in many areas of pregnancy care and investigation.

In addition, we feel there is a need to emphasise that the worries voiced also apply as much to medical personnel as well as “radiographers / sonographers”.
