Gastroenteritis is common in children during winter.

Symptoms may include vomiting, diarrhoea, tummy pain, and fever.
Most children improve with rest and plenty of fluids, but some need urgent medical advice.

🚨 Seek urgent help if your child has:
• Signs of dehydration (dry mouth, no tears, fewer wet nappies)
• Persistent vomiting or diarrhoea
• High or ongoing fever
• Blood in vomit or stools
• Severe tummy pain
• Extreme sleepiness or difficulty waking

Is your winter cream causing skin allergies? ❄️

During colder months, many people switch to heavier creams to combat dryness, but some products can trigger irritation, redness, itching, or rashes, especially on sensitive skin.

Fragrances, preservatives, and certain active ingredients may disrupt the skin barrier, leading to allergic reactions or contact dermatitis. If your skin feels worse after moisturising, your winter cream may be the cause.

Look out for warning signs such as burning, stinging, swelling, or persistent redness. Choosing fragrance-free, hypoallergenic products and stopping new creams can help, but ongoing symptoms should be checked by a medical professional.

🌙 If skin reactions are worsening or uncomfortable, Night Doctor offers trusted out-of-hours medical care when your GP is closed.

Ear pain is one of the most common reasons children feel unwell, and it can be caused by several things:

🔹 Middle ear infections (otitis media) – often after a cold or flu
🔹 Outer ear infections (swimmer’s ear) – from moisture or irritation
🔹 Blocked earwax – pressure and discomfort build-up
🔹 Teething – pain can radiate to the ears in younger children
🔹 Sinus or throat infections – pain may be referred to the ear
🔹 Foreign objects – small toys or beads placed in the ear

If your child has severe pain, fever, discharge from the ear, or symptoms lasting more than 48 hours, it’s important to seek medical advice. Early assessment can prevent complications and bring faster relief.

💙Your child’s comfort matters, don’t ignore persistent ear pain.

❄️ Why Asthma Often Worsens in Winter?

Cold weather can be especially challenging for people with asthma, and flare-ups are more common during the winter months. Here’s why:

🔹 Cold, dry air irritates the airways
🔹 Winter viruses like colds and flu trigger asthma symptoms
🔹 Indoor allergens (dust mites, mould, pet dander) increase as we stay indoors
🔹 Heating systems can dry and irritate the lungs
🔹 Reduced ventilation worsens air quality indoors

💡 Winter asthma tips:
✔ Keep inhalers easily accessible
✔ Use a spacer if prescribed
✔ Get your flu vaccine
✔ Keep indoor air clean and well-ventilated
✔ Wrap up in cold weather and cover your mouth outdoors

With the right precautions and treatment plan, asthma can stay well-controlled all winter long.

🌬️👶 Bronchiolitis in Children: What Parents Need to Know

Bronchiolitis is very common in babies and young children during the winter months, and while it can be worrying, most children recover with simple supportive care at home. Here’s what to look out for:

✨ Common Symptoms:
• Cough
• Fast or noisy breathing
• Wheezing
• Feeding less than usual
• Fever
• Irritability or tiredness

👶💙 How to Help at Home:
• Keep your child hydrated with small, frequent feeds
• Monitor their breathing, especially during sleep
• Keep the room air clear, avoid smoke exposure
• Allow them extra rest while they recover

⚠️ Seek urgent medical help if you notice:
• Breathing pauses
• Very fast breathing or chest pulling in
• Blue lips or tongue
• Reduced wet nappies
• Extreme tiredness or difficulty waking

Most cases of bronchiolitis improve within 2 weeks, but trust your instincts, early support can make a big difference.

💛 This winter, stay informed and stay prepared.
If you’re unsure, please reach out to us and we will guide you on what is best for your child.
