You don’t have a “fitness problem.”

You have a movement problem.

And most people never realise it because they’ve never actually assessed how their body moves.

In this article, I guide you through simple movement tests so you can see:

Where your body is compensating
What’s causing stiffness or imbalance
What needs attention before pain shows up

It also includes a printable workbook so you can track your own results.

This is available inside my paid Substack community, The Locker Room. ( part of your inner athlete) yourinnerathlete.substack.com where you can upgrade and join The Locker Room

Most people think getting older means getting stiff, weaker, and more tired.

That’s not the full truth.

Your body adapts to how you live and most modern lifestyles are slowly reshaping how you move.

The problem is you don’t notice it happening until pain shows up.

This article explains what’s really going on.

Knowing your genetics is one thing.
Actually using that information?

That’s where everything changes.
Most people never get that far.
They learn about risks, maybe even strengths but they don’t know what to do with it.
So they keep following the same routines and getting the same results.

In the full article, I’ve broken this down into something practical:
✔️ How to train based on your body
✔️ How to improve recovery and reduce inflammation
✔️ How to support your hormones in midlife
✔️ And how to build a plan that actually fits YOU

This is the part that makes the difference.

Are you training and eating based on what works for YOU or just following general advice?

In this episode, I chat with about how genetics can completely change the way we approach fitness and health especially as we get older.

We talk about:
Why midlife fitness needs a smarter approach
How hormones affect your energy, strength, and recovery
The role of sleep, stress, and brain health
How genetic insights can help you personalise your nutrition and training

The big takeaway? Your body isn’t generic so your strategy shouldn’t be either.

Have a listen and discover how to work with your body, not against it.
Let me know your biggest takeaway.

Have you ever felt like your body just doesn’t respond the same way anymore?

You’re doing the workouts, trying to eat well but the results aren’t what they used to be.

It’s frustrating and for a lot of people, it leads to doing more which surprisingly often makes things worse.

Here’s what’s actually happening:
As we hit midlife, our biology changes.
Hormones, recovery, metabolism all shift.
This is what you need to know, your genetics play a bigger role than most people realise.

Not in a “you’re stuck with it” way but in a way that can actually help you make better decisions.

I wrote a piece breaking this down and explaining:
• Why things change
• What most people get wrong
• And how to start thinking about your body differently

If this sounds like you, it’s worth a read.

I’m happy to share that I’ve completed my CIMSPA CPD in The Genetics of Physical Performance and Health with FitnessGenes .

I’ve been working with FitnessGenes for a little while now, and it’s been really interesting learning more about how our genetics can influence things like training response, recovery, and overall health.

For me, it’s highlighted how useful it can be to understand your own biology when it comes to making better long-term decisions around fitness and wellbeing whether that’s improving performance, recovering from setbacks, or simply taking a more proactive approach to health.

Whether a fitness fanatic or a professional athlete this is a game changer.

Looking forward to continuing to apply what I’ve learned in practice.

Thank and appreciation to and the team at

Most people who fail at big fitness goals don't lack motivation, they lack design.

A goal without structure is just a wish with a deadline and wishing harder is not a strategy.

In my latest subscriber article, I lay out the exact planning architecture I use with midlife high-performers to turn audacious goals into achievable ones.

Four layers, proven by research and built for people with demanding lives and no time to waste.

Here's a glimpse of what's inside:
→ Why willpower is almost never the real problem (and what is)
→ The "pay yourself first" principle applied to your health and why the morning is the only window you truly own
→ How to reverse engineer any big goal into a week-by-week plan that holds even when life gets chaotic
→ The one question to ask yourself every week that tells you instantly whether you're on track
→ Why deliberately seeking difficulty in training makes you a better decision-maker under pressure.

This is the how behind the why.

If you read the free article and felt the urgency this is where the roadmap lives.

At some point in your 40s something shifts.
You start to feel there is:
Less energy.
More hesitation.

A quiet voice saying “maybe this is it.”

Most people accept it but Jeff Weiss didn’t.
He started at 48.
Then went on to complete Ironmans and a 72-mile ultramarathon.

This isn’t about fitness it’s about this moment:
The moment you decide whether you’re winding down or stepping up.

In this episode of Unleash Your Inner Athlete, we talk about:
• Setting bold goals that scare you (and why that matters)
• Breaking out of “maintenance mode”
• Rebuilding strength, energy, and belief
• Why your best years don’t have to be behind you

The truth is:
You don’t lose your edge, you stop using it.

Have you ever told yourself: "I'll start when things calm down. When I have more energy. After this project."

But things don't calm down, do they?

I've been exploring this with a midlife endurance athlete someone who's been in the trenches of both high performance sport and life and what came out of our conversation was fascinating.

At midlife, we get wiser and more cautious. Which is mostly a strength, but it can quietly become the thing that stops us pursuing the goals that would genuinely light us up.

The naysayers don't even need to be other people. By 40 or 50, we've often internalised their voice so well we do their job for them.

Here's what I know from research and from watching people closely: the ones who stay sharp, energetic and fully present in their 50s and beyond are almost always the ones who refused to treat their fitness as optional.

Not as a hobby. As a professional priority.

The body is the platform everything else runs on and the margin for neglecting it shrinks significantly as we age.

I've written a full piece on this why the race is already on, and why it's never too late to run it well.

Would love to hear your thoughts below.

Have you ever let fitness slip during a demanding season and felt the cost of it?
