Today is . Sadly, with construction being a male dominated industry, mental health is still massively stigmatised, meaning that many people stay silent. We need to change this tradition of not opening up, or we will continue to see the high statistic of men working in construction being three times more likely to die by su***de. This needs to change. Let’s talk about mental health.

The 2021 Hammersmith Society Environment Award has been won by The Quaker Meeting House in Bradmore Park Road – one of our recently completed projects. The Society said they were immediately impressed with the quality of design and construction, its environmental credentials, and the feeling of serenity.
Designed by Satellite Architects, the building comprises the main meeting hall, library, children’s room, office, kitchen and shower room facilities. The Hammersmith Society said it had a: “refreshing display of design enthusiasm enriching surface and form: the intriguing circular shape of the building, the gates, screens and brickwork on the street boundary. Careful design and quality of construction dress the functional needs of the interiors, and bring a quiet and serene air to the circular Meeting Room, full of light from the high clerestory windows and the views to the meadow garden behind.”
We’re delighted to have worked on the design and build of this award winning worship and community space with A2Dominion as part of their Hammersmith Civic Campus scheme.

With the Syntec team now trained to install Nudura ICFs - Insulated Concrete Forms, we've just completed our first Nudura install on this extension of a west London property. The ground floor flat is also undergoing a deep retrofit, with better insulation, avoidance of thermal bridges, thermally efficient glazing and installation of an ultra-low energy heating/ventilation and hot water system - all this turning it into an energy efficient home with lower fuel bills, cleaner air and a healthier indoor climate.

Climate change: IPCC report is 'code red for humanity'
This report published today says it is "unequivocal" that human activity is responsible for global warming but there is new hope that deep cuts in emissions of greenhouse gases could stabilise rising temperatures. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-58130705

We must act now! With 78% of the London’s carbon emissions coming from its homes and workplaces, it’s time to:
• change the way we build: build greener, energy-efficient homes now – healthier homes with better insulation, better air quality, low-carbon heating and cooling and renewable power sources
• address the problem of ageing and energy-inefficient buildings: retrofit older buildings by making them airtight with improved insulation, installing advanced heat recovery systems and reclaimed energy systems

WORKING FROM HOME IN A HEATWAVE?
A recent government report into climate risks warned that unless homes can be kept cool in summer and warm in winter, health and productivity will suffer.
With temperatures remaining high all of this week, how can you keep your home cool?
• Create a through breeze – open windows on opposite sides of the house and let the air flow through
• Turn off any electrical appliances you’re not using - even on standby they produce heat
• Hand wash your dishes – no point in letting the dishwasher add to the steamy temperature
• Keep your curtains closed – the leading source of heat is sunlight through the windows
• Make an ice fan - fill up some bowls with water and ice and place them in front of a fan for an added chill
• Heat rises – if you have a loft space, open the hatch and let the heat escape up there
• Use your oven less – this is perfect weather for a BBQ outdoors or a salad
But the ultimate way to keep your cool in scorching temperatures is to join the Retrofit Revolution. One of Syntec’s specialities is tackling the problem of ageing and energy-inefficient homes. Retrofitting properties and installing better insulation, thermally efficient glazing, ultra low energy Heating/ventilation and hot-water systems and creating an airtight and draft-free environment means that older homes can be warm in the winter and cool in the summer. And all this makes buildings more energy efficient and helps to tackle the climate emergency.

Join the Retrofit Revolution! Mayor of London Sadiq Khan recently launched a scheme worth £5bn in the capital to upgrade cold, damp housing stock, make buildings more energy efficient and tackle the climate emergency. According to official data, London’s homes and workplaces are responsible for 78% of the carbon emissions and virtually all will need some level of retrofitting over the coming decade.
One of Syntec’s specialities is tackling the problem of ageing and energy-inefficient homes. This 1950s property in W3 had an energy performance certificate (EPC) rating of D, but with our retrofit plan which includes:
• better insulation
• avoidance of thermal bridges
• an airtight and draft-free environment
• thermally efficient glazing
• ultra low energy Heating/ventilation and hot-water system
the building will attain an EPC rating of B once works are complete (exceeding the Mayor of London’s target of C). And the benefits to the happy home-owner? Lower fuel bills, better air quality, better noise insulation and a home that is fit for the future.

Syntec’s approach can be scaled up and rolled out over large housing estates.
