The 4-Month Sleep Regression

Just when your baby was starting to sleep for longer periods… BAM! Night wakings, nap refusal and daytime fussiness takes over!

At around 4 months, your little one’s brain is growing fast! They’re learning new skills: hand-eye coordination, tracking objects, recognizing faces, reaching for toys, and even starting to babble. They may dribble more too (which doesn’t necessarily mean they are teething!).

Try to remember: This isn’t a setback - it’s a progression. Your baby needs comfort, reassurance, and lots of love right now. Take care of yourself too and rest when you can.

Hang in there. This challenging phase will pass, and your baby is learning so much every day!

Tummy bugs can make your little one feel pretty miserable but usually you can care for your child at home and they’ll recover within about a week.

The biggest risk is dehydration, which is when the body loses too much water and salts and can’t perform its usual functions properly. This can be very serious.

Swipe for symptoms of dehydration in children.
Keep offering breast milk or usual feeds for babies.

For older babies and children give lots of small sips of water.

Most children feel better in a few days but if it lasts longer, get in touch with your GP.

Did you spot the danger?

The answer: this little one is wearing a thick, puffy coat in their car seat.
It might seem harmless but bulky coats can make car seats far less effective in a crash. That extra padding means the harness isn’t snug against your child’s body, even if it looks tight.

Here’s a quick way to check if a coat is too bulky:

Step 1: Buckle your child into their car seat with their coat on and tighten the straps.
Step 2: Without loosening the straps, take your child out, remove the coat, then buckle them back in.

If you can pinch the strap between your fingers, the coat is too thick to be worn safely.

Instead:
Pop a blanket over them once they’re strapped in
Or use a car seat-safe cover to keep them cosy and protected

Sparkler Safety Tip!

Did you know sparklers can burn at up to 1,649°C? That’s hotter than some flames! They might look magical and be fun for little ones but they can cause very serious burns if not handled carefully.

Here’s a clever little hack for Bonfire Night

Instead of letting little hands hold the metal stick, pop the end of the sparkler into a carrot!

The carrot doesn’t conduct heat
It’s easier for small hands to grip
And it keeps the sparkler further from their face and body

Keep a bucket of water or sand nearby for used sparklers.

Always supervise closely - once it’s gone out, take it from them straight away.

Stay safe and have a sparkling Bonfire Night from all of us at Daisy First Aid!

Halloween is almost here!

We can’t wait to see all the little (and big!) ones dressed up in their spooky, sparkly, and scary costumes!

But while the costumes are super fun, remember, most are mass-produced and not always made with safety in mind. Here are a few tips to help keep your little ghouls and goblins safe this Halloween:

Keep costumes and kids well away from open flames. Use battery-operated candles instead of real ones for pumpkins or decorations.

Try to buy from reputable brands and look for the CE, UKCA or UKNI mark to make sure costumes meet safety standards.

Add an extra layer underneath costumes for warmth and protection.

Teach children to STOP, DROP and ROLL if their costume ever catches fire it can make all the difference.

Most importantly - have fun and stay safe!

Are you going trick-or-treating this year? Tell us what your little one will be dressed as in the comments!

Happy Diwali!
Wishing you all a bright and joyous Diwali filled with love, laughter, and light!
Diwali is known as the Festival of Lights. It symbolizes the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil. People celebrate by lighting diyas (oil lamps), decorating homes with vibrant rangoli, sharing sweets, and setting off fireworks.
It's a time to come together with loved ones, reflect on inner growth, and spread positivity. Here’s to a prosperous year ahead!

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a common cause of coughs and colds. RSV infectinos usually get better by themselves, but can sometimes be serious for babies and older adults.

RSV infections are very common. Almost all children get them at least once before they’re 2 years old.

They're not usually serious, but some babies and adults have a higher risk of getting seriously ill, particularly:

babies under 6 months old
young children who were born prematurely
adults over 75 years
babies, children and adults with a weakened immune system, or long-term lung or heart conditions
people who smoke to***co and babies exposed to to***co smoke

In babies, RSV is a common cause of a type of chest infection called bronchiolitis.

This can cause breathing problems and may need to be treated in hospital.
RSV can also cause a serious lung infection (pneumonia) in babies and older adults.

Swipe for symptoms and when to get advice from medical professionals.

Febrile seizures

Febrile seizures are relatively common in young children and can be very scary to witness, especially if you’ve never heard of them.

They usually last for around 2 to 3 minutes and it’s important to know what to do during and after a seizure.

They usually affect children between 6 months and 6 years old because the part of the brain that controls temperature regulation isn’t fully developed.

Burns awareness stat (burns awareness day 15th Oct)

46 of those cases is due to hot drinks spills.

A hot drink can seriously burn a child 15 minutes after it’s been made. It’s important to keep hot drinks well out of reach of little ones and remind any guests visiting of how important this is too.
• Across the board (children & adults) scalds are the most common cause of burn injury, representing 43% of acute burn injuries
• It is estimated that on average 110 children per day are seen in emergency departments with burn injuries – 46 as a result of a hot cup of tea or coffee spill
• The majority of burn injuries occurring to children are between 3 and 6pm
• The most common place of injury for children is in the home – 49% of whom are burnt in the kitchen
• The average cost to the NHS for a major burn is £168,155
• Burn cooling is critical in the initial first aid response to injury – applying cool running water for 20 minutes is considered best practice.
If your child does accidentally get burned the first aid treatment they receive could make all the difference to their recovery.

Remember:

1 – remove any clothing (including their nappy as this will retain the hot liquid and potentially cause more harm)
2 – cool the burn for 20 mins under cool running
3 – cover the burn with cling film

Then take the child to be seen by a medical professional.

Children’s skin burns at a lower temperature to ours so it’s so important to take extra care when there are little ones around.

My experience with Daisy First Aid as a training provider has been overwhelmingly positive. The course was divided into two sections, comprising an initial 6-hour block of e-learning which could be completed at the learner's own pace and an in-person day which comprehensively covered all of the practical elements related to first aid and basic life support. Whilst the e-modules were really comprehensive and well constructed, I found some of the video content a little glitchy, which needed me to refresh the screen on several occasions. This would typically take me back to the video that I'd already watched, which was a little frustrating, but the tech difficulties could have been due to my internet connection; I'm not sure. The face-to-face content was delivered by Sarah, whose style and pace of delivery really allowed me to listen and absorb the content in a way that felt relaxed and non-threatening. She brought with her a whole wealth of experience and fed in anecdotes from her time as a paediatric A&E nurse, which really helped to bring the sessions to life. She even managed to put the group at ease when we undertook the multiple-choice questions at the end of the day. Overall, I would definitely recommend the course to anyone looking to develop or refresh their essential first aid knowledge and skills.
