Chilblains & Cold Weather ❄️

With freezing temperatures and snow, chilblains become much more common. This is an inflammatory skin reaction that happens when cold, damp skin is suddenly rewarmed — something that often affects toes and fingers during winter.

Common signs include: • Red, purple or bluish patches on the skin
• Swelling and tenderness

• Itching, burning, pain or small blisters
Why winter increases the risk: • Cold slows down blood flow to the extremities

• Wet socks or shoes increase heat loss
• Rapid warming indoors can trigger abnormal vascular reactions
How to protect your feet in winter: • Keep them warm, dry and well insulated

• Change wet socks as soon as possible
• Rewarm gradually — avoid direct heat
• Moisturise regularly to protect the skin barrier
• Wear properly fitting, weather-appropriate footwear

If symptoms persist, worsen, or the skin breaks, professional assessment is important to prevent infection or complications.
Stay warm and take care of your skin 🤍

"Excessive wear at rear edge - calcaneal gait of spina bifida."

■The Cause

Spina bifida is a congenital malformation of the spine that affects the normal function of the nerves controlling the leg muscles.
Due to this neurological impairment, the muscles responsible for lifting and stabilizing the heel become weak, causing the person to walk with the toes lifted and the heel pressing excessively on the ground.
This abnormal distribution of pressure leads to calcaneal gait and its associated biomechanical consequences.

People with spina bifida often develop a calcaneal gait – walking mainly on the heel, which causes shoe wear, pain, and balance issues.
The good news? With custom orthoses, physiotherapy, and adaptive footwear, walking can greatly improve, restoring comfort and stability.
🦶 Calcaneal gait isn’t just visible — it’s a sign the foot needs the right kind of support.

🔍 Heel Fissures
Feet treatment – by Sonia from Light Step

Heel fissures are linear cracks in the epidermis that can extend into the dermis, typically forming in areas of mechanical stress. When open, they may serve as portals for bacterial entry, increasing the risk of infection and ulceration — particularly in individuals with diabetes mellitus.

💡 Management and Prevention:
✔ Maintain optimal skin hydration
✔ Ensure daily foot hygiene and thorough drying, especially between toes
✔ Apply emollients containing urea, lactic acid, paraffin, glycerine, or petrolatum
✔ For anhidrotic skin, nourish regularly; for hyperhidrotic skin, use astringent antiperspirants
✔ In some cases, medical-grade adhesive may be used to close deeper fissures
