Strength training just got another big vote of confidence 💪

The American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM)—widely considered the gold standard in exercise science—has released its latest position stand on resistance training.

And the message is refreshingly simple:

👉 You don’t need perfect… you just need to start.

The biggest benefits come from going from not doing it → doing something consistently.

Here’s what really matters:

✔️ Consistency beats complexity
You don’t need advanced techniques or a perfect programme—regular training is what drives results.

✔️ Strength AND power matter
It’s not just about getting stronger—moving with speed and intent becomes increasingly important as we age.

✔️ There’s no one-size-fits-all
The best programme is the one that fits you—your goals, your lifestyle, and what you actually enjoy.

✔️ You don’t need a gym
Bodyweight, resistance bands, home workouts… they all work when done consistently.

✔️ Twice a week is a great start
Training all major muscle groups at least 2x per week can have a meaningful impact on strength, health, and function.

⸝

At True North Physio, this is exactly what we focus on:

✨ Individualised, evidence-based exercise
✨ Building confidence alongside strength
✨ Helping you find something that feels manageable—and sustainable

Because if it’s not something you can stick to, it’s not the right plan.

If you’ve been unsure where to start, or felt like you needed to “do it perfectly” before beginning—this is your reminder that you don’t.

Start simple. Stay consistent. Build from there 🤍

Back pain doesn’t always mean stop ❌

In fact, for most people with low back pain, the right kind of movement can be one of the most effective ways to feel better ✔️

As recommended by NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, which provides evidence-based guidance for healthcare in the UK), therapeutic exercise is a key part of managing low back pain.

It can help to:
– reduce pain
– improve strength and support around the spine
– restore movement and confidence
– help you get back to doing the things you enjoy

Group exercise (whether strength-based, aerobic or more mind–body like Pilates) is also recommended—what matters most is finding something that suits you and feels manageable.

You might also benefit from hands-on treatment like massage or joint mobilisation—but this works best alongside exercise, not instead of it.

It’s not about pushing through pain or doing more for the sake of it…
it’s about doing the right things, in the right way, at the right time.

If you’ve been told to just “rest” or you’re worried about making things worse, you’re not alone—but you’re not stuck.

With the right guidance, movement can feel safe again 🤍

If you’d like support, my classes and 1:1 sessions are designed to help you move with confidence.

March is for mobility.

100 squats a day.
2,800 reps.
All for Cancer Research UK 🤍

By the end, my glutes are stronger —
but also shorter. Tighter.

Why bother stretching?

Because strength creates adaptation.
Muscles shorten and thicken.
The nervous system increases tone.
You gain power — but sometimes lose range of movement.

And healthy ageing depends on maintaining flexibility.

Stretching doesn’t reduce strength.
It allows strength to exist through a larger range.

Mobility after strength helps the body feel balanced —
not just strong, but usable.

Because resilience isn’t built in muscle contraction alone.

🧠 Concussion Prevention in Sport 🤕

The 2023 BJSM Consensus Statement now highlights neuromuscular training (NMT) warm-ups as a key tool to reduce concussion risk — yes, not just for knees and ankles.

Key components?

Balance, agility, strength, neck control, and aerobic work. When done regularly (3×/week), have been linked with lower concussion rates in youth sport.

As physiotherapists, we can:
• Lead coach workshops to embed NMT in warm-ups
• Build in neck-specific exercises safely
• Monitor and evaluate how NMT affects injury / concussion risk over time

Think: mini agility ladders, hopping, balance tasks, reaction games, neck-control holds — all quick, fun, and kid-friendly.

Prevention isn’t just for pros — it starts on the grassroots pitch.
Small changes in warm-up = big changes in safety. 🌱⚽️🏉🧠

💛 Happy World Kindness Day! 💛

Today is a beautiful reminder that kindness isn’t just something we offer to others — it’s something we practise with our own bodies, too.

In Physio-Led Pilates, we focus on moving with awareness, compassion, and respect for where your body is today. Every breath, every stretch, every controlled movement is a chance to practise kindness toward yourself.

🌿 Be kind to your body — it’s working hard for you.
🌿 Be patient with your progress — strength, mobility, and control grow with consistency.
🌿 Be gentle with your mind — movement is as much about how you feel as how you function.

If your body needs a little extra care, guidance, or recovery support, you can also book in for a physio appointment. Whether it’s pain, injury prevention, or improving movement, I’m here to help you feel and move better.

✨ Celebrate World Kindness Day by giving your body the compassion it deserves — on the mat or in the clinic.

💪 Shoulder Stability Duo: Serratus anterior + Lower Trapezius

The serratus anterior and lower trapezius are the unsung heroes of shoulder strength and control.
Together they form a force couple — working in sync to keep your scapula stable and mobile at the same time.

✨ Serratus anterior → protracts + upwardly rotates the scapula
✨ Lower traps → assist upward rotation + add controlled depression

When they coordinate well, your shoulder blade glides smoothly =
✅ better overhead strength
✅ reduced impingement risk
✅ stronger, more efficient movement

When they’re weak or mistimed → upper traps + pecs overwork → instability, tightness, or shoulder and neck pain.

Your deltoids, pecs and biceps might do some heavy lifting —
but your shoulder stability starts around the blade.
