I’m super quiet on the gram at the moment because honestly who has the time! I’m always so amazed at people who can post content regularly. Anyhoo life has just gotten a lot busier, but on we go 💜

This is something I see a lot… for the first couple of days after birth, breastfeeding goes great. No pain, baby latches. Dreamy!! Then after a week or so… things can go a bit awry.

People understandably freak out a bit, and think it’s something they’re doing wrong. But it’s often just part of learning to breastfeed.

Perhaps from the beginning the latch wasn’t quite deep enough, and now the Oxytocin has worn off a bit and suddenly the pain is hitting you harder.

Maybe you’re suddenly feeling incredibly engorged and sore, which is making it harder for your baby to latch, and is causing pain for you.

Every person’s feeding journey is unique, and sometimes the reality doesn’t match up with the expectations we had in pregnancy.

Seeking support is vital. We weren’t meant to do this alone. Accounts mentioned are tagged ⬇️

Baby Massage in Notting Hill - May and June dates now live and available to book via Happity!

If you’re a new parent in West London, baby massage classes are the perfect way to bond with your baby and support their healthy development.

Baby massage offers numerous benefits, including better sleep, improved digestion, and relief from colic.

Throughout the class there’s time to chat about all things infant care, safe sleep, and you can get support with infant feeding, whether breastfed or bottle fed.

I am a Postnatal Doula who has worked with many families and newborns supporting them as they adjust to life with a new baby. These classes are a wonderful place for me to support you in your role as a parent (whether it’s your first or your fourth!) and for you to meet and connect with other parents in the area.

Available to book now on Happity - happity.co.uk/midnight-birth-club

Today is World Breastfeeding in Public Day. This is one of this things I imagine trying to explain to my ancestors 😂 This is a day that needs to be marked and celebrated (because breastfeeding rates are so low) but it’s also kinda wild.

Babies should be fed wherever they need to be. I don’t know what else to say.

This picture is the first I have of me feeding Winter outside, but it wasn’t the first time. I remember that SO well.

It was January, freezing, and I’d met a friend for a Covid walk in Hyde Park. I thought Winter would sleep the whole time in the soft sling but she woke up and roared, and told me to get her on the b**b quick. Except it wasn’t quick because it was so new to me, I was fumbling with the sling and all my layers, and we were being whipped by gale winds and sideways rain. But still… we got there. She relaxed in my arms, fell asleep and then went back in the sling for the rest of the walk.

I’ve been breastfeeding “in public” for over 3 years combined and I’ve never once had a negative comment, I’ve had plenty of lovely reassuring smiles from women walking past, but mostly I’ve just been ignored because I’m just feeding a baby innit. 👶🏻

For all the London pregnant folks - if breastfeeding is how you intend to feed your baby, our next breastfeeding masterclass is on Sunday 9th March 1-4pm in Notting Hill 🥰

Midwife Jessima and I will
be running this jam packed Breastfeeding Masterclass regularly for those who are expecting a new baby in the coming months. Next date: Sunday 9th March.

As a Postnatal Doula working with many new families, I often hear from parents struggling to breastfeed that they wish they had known a bit more about feeding their baby before they were born. This is exactly why we want to bring this breastfeeding masterclass to as many people as possible.

Breastfeeding is the optimal way to feed your baby, as your milk is specifically designed to meet the needs of your little one. And although breastfeeding is something very natural, it doesn’t always come easy, especially if you have not experienced breastfeeding within your family or social circles.

But knowledge is power, and this masterclass has been created to make sure you know the common challenges that people come up against, and how to overcome them.

We cannot guarantee a seamless breastfeeding journey, but you will be a whole load more confident and likely to succeed after this masterclass.

On the whole, bedsharing for our family is absolutely how we feel most comfortable.

But that doesn’t mean it’s always easy. (Last night I had a feeding/acrobat baby on my left side, and a 4 year crying on my right side because I couldn’t put my arm around her. In this moment I learned I can in fact contort my body in ways I never knew possible 😂)

I do think generally bedsharing gets parents (and babies) more sleep - but that’s not the only reason many families sleep together.

All across the world, for millions of families, sharing a bed is simply the norm. Children need their parents, night and day, and keeping them close at night makes responding to them easier. Sharing a bed also means prolonged breastfeeding.

Many people who are pregnant for the first time are adamant they won’t bedshare because they assume it’s dangerous. But in fact, falling asleep with your baby on a sofa or an arm chair (or in a bed not set up to sleep safely) is the most dangerous way to sleep with a baby.

So even if you’re not planning on bedsharing, take a few minutes to learn about safe bedsharing so if you find yourself nodding off at 3am while feeding your baby (hello sleep hormones!) you know how to put a few things in place to be safe.

It’s not rocket science. No heavy bedding. Not when you’ve been drinking or taking medication that makes you sleep very deeply. Don’t have pets or other young children in the bed. Trust your instincts 💜

Do you bedshare sometimes/all the time?
