Today we are at St Leonard’s Church, Middleton, a place with nearly a millennium of history behind it. 🕊️

St Leonard’s stands on a site of worship dating back to Saxon times, when a modest church dedicated to St Cuthbert stood here to shelter his remains, brought to Middleton around the 880s to escape Viking raids.

After the Norman conquest, a sturdier stone church was built (c. 1100), dedicated to the French saint Saint Leonard and fragments of that Norman building remain within the fabric of today’s church.

The main structure we see now was erected in 1412 by local born Thomas Langley who went on to become Bishop of Durham and Lord Chancellor of England, re-using parts of the old Norman doorway to create the tower arch.

Then, in 1524, the church was enlarged by Sir Richard Assheton (following his knighthood for his role in the 1513 Battle of Flodden). Among the additions is the famous “Flodden Window”, thought to be the oldest war-memorial in the UK, commemorating the Middleton archers who fought at Flodden.

Inside, the church holds one of the finest collections of monumental brasses in the North of England, including a rare brass in full armour of a Civil War officer, along with medieval screens, carved woodwork, stained glass, and a mixture of architectural styles that chronicle centuries of local and national history.

Today, St Leonard’s remains a living parish in the Diocese of Manchester a solid reminder that even as we look back over the centuries, this church continues to serve and bring people together ❤️⛪️

Yesterday we had the honour of taking lifelong Manchester City fan Michael 'Mike' Boden on his final journey.

We began with a beautiful church service before travelling to the Etihad Stadium, a place that meant so much to Mike 🩵

In a truly touching gesture, Manchester City welcomed the funeral cortège into the stadium grounds and displayed Mike’s photo on the big screens outside , a moment of pure class and respect that his family will never forget.

We then continued on to Blackley Crematorium for the committal, bringing Mike’s journey to a dignified and heartfelt close.

Rest easy, Mike 💙
Forever a Blue.

At S. Wellens, we’ve begun decorating our beautiful lounge for the festive season, and our Christmas tree is now standing proudly, ready to become a Tree of Memories for our community.

Over the next few days, we will be sending out memorial cards to families who have sadly lost a loved one this year. Each card can be placed on our tree as a gentle tribute, a way to honour and remember someone special during what can be a very difficult time.

We would also like to warmly invite anyone who has ever lost someone dear to them to visit our branch where you are most welcome to write your own memorial message, hang it on the tree, and spend some quiet time reflecting.

Our lounge is open, peaceful, and you’ll be greeted with a friendly face, along with a cup of tea or coffee if you’d like one ❤️

This season is about togetherness, remembrance, and kindness.
You don’t have to go through it alone. 💛

If you have any questions or would like more information, please feel free to get in touch at our branch

🌿 A Proud Part of Chadderton’s Story 🌿

Did you know our Chadderton branch has been part of the wonderful community for decades?

Since 1960 to be precise when S.Wellens incorporated J Dysons and our site at Washbrook was set to serve the community

As part of S. Wellens & Sons, a family business that started back in 1870, we’ve grown alongside Chadderton, supporting local families with care, respect, and compassion.

Our funeral arranger Sue continues the S.Wellens tradition, helping families create meaningful tributes and memories.

It’s an honour to be part of so many life stories here in Chadderton — past, present, and future.

💐 Thank you Chadderton for letting us be part of your community.

Today, we came together as a community to honour and remember all those who gave so much for our freedom. Their bravery, selflessness, and sacrifice will never be forgotten 🌺

As we paused for the two-minute silence at 11am, we held in our hearts not only those who served, but also the families who carried their memory forward.

“We will remember them.” 🇬🇧
