The OP-1 by Swedish manufacturer combines multiple synth engines, sampler, four sequencer types, tape-style 4-track recorder, motion sensor, and an FM radio to offer a truly unique palette of tools. Unfortunately it’s quite common to see the volume pot breaking off the circuit board like this example. Luckily the important pads hadn’t lifted from the board so I was able to reattach the pot saving the need to buy a new board.

On the bench today is a Shure M67 broadcasting mic mixer. This unit was curiously labelled as 110v unit but was wired with a 240v plug and so some investigation was required. Fortunately there was a small clue on the inside which confirmed the unit was infact a 240v model. All that remained was to clean and refurb the pots, replace the power supply filter caps and test for a full bill of health.

The M67 was introduced in 1968 with production continued through 1987. In 1968, many radio stations were still using portable mixers with vacuum tubes, so an upgrade to solid state was a plus. One of the early footnotes in the history of the M67 was its use in the recording of Woodstock in 1969.

Korg M1 back up and running. Arrived filthy and in pieces with some issues; Broken power switch, no sound output on the right channel, faulty control panel switches, display panel yellowed, display contrast not working and missing quite a few screws all over. Replaced all the 34 tact switches, rebuilt PSU, swapped screen for new LED TYPE, replaced faulty volume slider and contrast pots. Replaced all broken hardware with new, replaced battery and restored original sound banks and sourced new screws based on the specs from the service manual. This 90s house classic synth is ready to make music!

This week had a MKS100 on the bench for a quick service and Gotek upgrade, with home-made caddy and facia. This is an early 80s classic 12bit sampler with a mighty 4 and a bit seconds of sample time. If you ever played the board game mousetrap you will know where Roland got the inspiration for the power switch mech 🙂

Something different - This Korg Electribe had been subjected to a 110v power supply being plugged into 240v mains socket. Brought back from the dead by Synth Clinic including a full tube calibration, as good as new. Few small nicks to the edges of the blue anodised aluminium panel but otherwise in excellent condition. For sale with standard 3 month warranty, power supply and 64Mb smart memory card. P.O.A

Finished up the Roland RS09 analogue string polysynth this weekend. This synth had the purple caps of doom installed with evidence of leaking all over the place. After a full recap, reflow of dry solder joints, and some repairs to the PSU, it started to make sound again albeit very distorted (tracked down to a blown resistor on the -15v rail). I also noticed that there was no gate or response from the attack slider. Upon closer inspection, I noticed that a previous tech had attempted to install a BC546 transistor which has a different pinout to what the circuit expects. I had some of the correct type in stock so swapped it out to get the synth fully back up and running.

Back from holiday and straight back to it. This is a full analogue recreation of the Juno 106 chorus circuit in a convenient effects box. The chorus LFO can be controlled from the rate and depth controls or can be replaced with an external source. I’ve gone with the original MN3009 bucket bridgade delay chips and so is essentially like routing an external signal into a Juno106. This one will be up for grabs when it’s finished, so keep an eye out here.

CAPACITORRRRRRZZ!!!

An early Roland RS-09 Mk1 (1978) analogue string synthesiser. When working, these machines have a lush sounding ensemble effect made by 4 individual bucket brigade circuits. This was brought in as a non-working example and is currently in the process of having the power supply recapped.

Up next is the Roland TR606 analogue drum machine from 1981 and a personal favourite of mine. I have given this machine a complete overhaul with new tact switches and a full service calibration. After 40 years without Midi, it was time to bring it up to date with a Tubbutec Unipulse upgrade. This gives the 606 full velocity control of all 7 original voices and 6 new additional voices, midi clock sync & CC control of high hat & cymbal decay and length
