When antibiotics are needed

âś… Sometimes, antibiotics are absolutely the right treatment.
Bacterial infections such as pneumonia, urine infections with systemic features, skin and soft-tissue infections, and certain long-lasting symptoms may need antibiotic therapy. When we prescribe, we choose the right antibiotic, at the right dose, for the right duration — not too long, not too short. Much like brewing a proper cup of tea, timing matters.

Self-care and symptom management

🌿 Good news: you can treat most common infections at home.
Pharmacies can help with pain relief, throat sprays, nasal decongestants, and practical advice. Remember: symptoms such as a cough can linger for several weeks after viral infections, even when you’re otherwise on the mend.

When antibiotics don’t help

🤧 Colds, flu, COVID-19, viral sore throats, and most chest infections don’t respond to antibiotics.
These illnesses need time, rest, fluids, and symptomatic care — not antibiotic prescriptions. Taking antibiotics when they’re not needed won’t speed up recovery, but it will increase the risk of side effects and resistance. If in doubt, speak to the clinical team — there’s no shame in checking; we’d rather guide than guess.

Why antibiotic resistance matters

đź’Š When antibiotics are overused, they stop working effectively.
This isn’t a distant, theoretical worry — it’s happening now in hospitals and communities across the UK. Resistant infections can mean longer illness, more complications, and fewer treatment options. By using antibiotics only when necessary, we help keep them strong and reliable.

How to protect antibiotics

🛡️ Everyone can play a part in protecting antibiotics for the future.
Here’s how:
• Take antibiotics exactly as prescribed
• Never share or save leftover antibiotics
• Return unused medication to the pharmacy
• Keep up with vaccinations to prevent infections in the first place
• Seek advice early if you’re unsure about your symptoms
