Congratulations to student midwife Lydia who facilitated her 40th birth!
Favourite midwifery fact:
The way babies don’t breathe underwater during a water birth because they get oxygen from the placenta via the umbilical cord; their lungs aren’t used for breathing yet, and a natural “dive reflex” keeps their airway closed when submerged in warm water, preventing them from inhaling water until they’re lifted into the air and exposed to stimuli that trigger their first breath.
Best way to promote physiology:
Create safety, protect space, and trust the body.
That means quiet environments, low lighting, continuous support, freedom to move, and uninterrupted time for the hormones of labor to do their work - which is exactly why I have such passion for the birth centre🤍
Fun fact about myself:
I have an unhealthy obsession with full fat coke when I’m on shift🫢 Nothing beats that feeling of a crisp cold can of coke when it’s a busy shift🤣😍
As part of midwifery training, student midwives must facilitate forty vaginal births prior to registration.
During assessment or admission, students may support with your care under the supervision of our midwifery teams. Your consent will be gained prior to care participation. As well as gaining experience, they can offer invaluable emotional support, continuity of care, a calm and reassuring presence and much more.
We receive fab feedback about our student midwives contributions - You Go, Glen Coco! 👯♀️
