Day 3 of ADHD medication (Equasym)

No side effects as of yet. Stocked up on protein powder and easy to eat treats for if/when the lack of appetite that people keep warning me about kicks in.

The boy has said he doesn’t feel any different. Hopefully his teachers will notice a difference and he can start enjoying school again ❤️

Day 1 of ADHD medication.

Sat here waiting for the boy to wake up so he can have his first dose. Heard stories of weight loss, losing their personality, feeling like a zombie.

Am I making the right choice? Who knows, I’m sure time will tell.

Bittersweet day receiving the boy’s ADHD report and his medication prescription. What should feel like a positive step feels all a bit sad. I’m worried about side effects, I don’t want him to lose his personality (his teachers may disagree there!). I suppose time will tell ❤️

A long and productive conversation with the boys HoY today. We both recognise that the strategies she wants implementing are not being used by all of his teachers, for a number of reasons (and I get most of them, this isn’t a rant!)

He struggles the most after break, dinner time and PE lessons. He was given an hour detention yesterday in his lesson after PE. He will sit the detention tonight but not the whole hour as that is too much for him.

His HoY asked his English teacher how they deal with him, he does well in this lesson and has no negative points from this teacher. The teacher also has ADHD and find short instructions like “*child’s name*, book!” works better than a longer instruction. They also find that regular prompts and check-ins help.

The strategies used by his English teacher will be shared with the wider staff body to help them support the neurodiverse children in the school.

A wonderfully positive conversation! ❤️

My son’s Head of Year has asked teachers to implement some strategies in the classroom to help him. They include:

- a doodle pad
- a fidget toy
- being given jobs to do such as handing out worksheets so he gets that time out of his seat
- be aware that he may not get instructions first time and to quietly check
- give him extra time to understand instructions
- re-word questions as he will stick to yes/no/I don’t know

Some I would add would be:

- a movement break card (especially in lessons after break or dinner as he struggles to regulate)
- a timeout pass

Struggling to find a balance between understanding how my son’s teachers struggle with him and needing the school to support him, as an ex-teacher still working in education I wholeheartedly sympathise with them, I know the struggles are not their fault. They are overworked and overwhelmed.

As a parent navigating this new world of SEND on a personal level, I am going to use this page as an ongoing blog. If it helps anyone, not that I think anyone will read it, then great. If nobody reads it at least it is a place for me to vent.
