Proud to see our apprentices Alfie Barnes (Joinery) and Oliver Phillipson (Bricklaying) thriving on the Earlestown Town Hall refurbishment.

Both have settled in brilliantly, gaining hands-on experience on a heritage project and showing real skill, commitment and pride in their work.

Supporting the next generation of trades is something we care deeply about at HH Smith and these two are a credit to the team.

Extension Works - Cafe & Servery Update

A major milestone has been reached at Earlestown Town Hall, where our team has now completed the installation of the new structural steel frame that will house the future café space.

This installation marks a significant step forward in revitalising this historic community landmark.

🔩 Steel Frame Highlights

- 5.991 tonnes of hot-rolled steel
- 61 assemblies
- Dimensions: 3.5m high, 8m wide, 11.9m long (to the existing structure)
- Plus a 7.2m canopy section running down the side

🌍 Sustainable Sourcing

The hot-rolled steel—excluding CHS sections—was supplied from a rolling mill in Olaberria and Bergara, Spain, produced using an Electric Arc Furnace (EAF).
EAF steel provides significant environmental benefits:

♻️ 93.9% recycled scrap content
🌱 Considerably reduced carbon emissions
🔄 High recycling rates and improved material circularity

🤝 Collaboration

A huge thank you to BD Structures, who delivered the steel installation on time and to an excellent standard. Always a pleasure working with their team once again.

We look forward to sharing the next phase of progress as the transformation of Earlestown Town Hall continues!

Earlestown Town Hall - Latest Progress Update

Progress continues at pace on the refurbishment works, with a key milestone achieved in the lower attic this week.

Our team has successfully installed the attic steels and completed the timber floor decking, preparing the area for the upcoming MEP installation.

Because this is a heritage building, the new steelwork had to be carefully designed around the existing timber trusses, ensuring full coordination and zero clashes. To support this, a cloud-based survey of the attic was undertaken in advance, allowing the MEP design team to verify that the HMVR units could be safely and efficiently accommodated within the restricted space.

From a logistical standpoint, the installation required detailed planning. The steels had to be spliced into manageable sections so they could be carried and installed by hand within the confined attic environment—another great example of the collaborative problem-solving on this project.

👏 Well done to everyone involved in reaching this stage. More updates coming soon as we continue to restore and modernise this important community landmark.

Work to bring Earlestown’s Grade II listed Town Hall back to life has reached a major milestone, as a special steel-signing took place marking the installation of the new extension’s structural frame.

Councillor Kate Groucutt, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member - Business and Inclusive Growth, St Helens Borough Council, said:

“Today’s steel signing marks a symbolic step toward the rebirth of Earlestown Town Hall, and it’s fantastic to see such strong progress at the end of what has been such an exciting year for the town. This was a great opportunity to celebrate the teamwork and commitment from everyone involved that has got us to this point in the construction process, and to look forward to what’s to come in 2026.”

Mike Smith, HH Smith & Sons Project Manager, said:

“Seeing the first steel go up helps bring the vision of the Council and ECF to life, and to have it signed in this way makes the milestone even more special. It’s a privilege to be building something that will serve Earlestown for decades.”

Proud to support the community as we continue our work on Earlestown Town Hall!

Our team recently had the honour of presenting a £2,000 donation to St John the Baptist Church in Earlestown to help fuel the vital services they provide, from warm spaces and food support to community groups. As a family-run business rooted in the places we build, it was a privilege to give back during this exciting regeneration journey.

"As a family-run business, we believe strongly in supporting the communities where we work. Earlestown Town Hall is a special building with huge local significance, and we wanted to mark our involvement in its restoration by supporting a church that does so much good for local people. We're pleased to make this donation and to play our part in helping the community during this period." - Mike Smith

Once the former library, it was separated by an additional floor in the 1950's and before the works started was home to the Rochdale Music Service.

We recently sat down with Alfie Barnes, our latest Joinery Apprentice, to talk about his experience on site at the Earlestown Town Hall refurbishment project 🔨

Alfie has settled in quickly, working closely with our joinery team and gaining hands-on experience in both first and second fix works. Being part of a heritage refurbishment, he’s learning the importance of precision, craftsmanship, and respecting the original character of the building—skills that are essential for any joiner.

During the interview, Alfie spoke about how much he’s enjoying the variety of work on site and the support he’s received from the wider team, helping him grow in confidence as he develops his trade. Contributing to the restoration of such a well-known local landmark has made the experience even more rewarding.

At HHS, we’re committed to developing young talent and creating real opportunities through apprenticeships. Alfie’s positive attitude and eagerness to learn reflect exactly what we aim to achieve on our projects.

Well done, Alfie—great to have you on the team 👏
