Even joy can feel dangerous after a Bipolar diagnosis. ⚠️

After episodes, it’s normal to question your own emotions. Happiness, sadness, even excitement… You might hold back, afraid it’ll spiral out of control.

Recovery isn’t about stopping feelings. It’s about learning to trust them again.

Food was always a tricky one for me when I was struggling with OCD. I felt like all of my thoughts had to feel ‘just right’ to then allow me to enjoy my food. This was worsened when it was a meal I wanted to enjoy more meaning OCD, being the joy thief that it is, was ruining nice occasions/treats for me regularly. 🥘

When it got really bad, I would often get tearful when I was presented with food as it all came to a head, or over drink when out for a meal to push through it. Even when I got started I would have the lingering thought to go back to the compulsion to allow me to enjoy that next bite or go to the toilet and start the compulsion again. It was an awful cycle that to be honest I have only recently started to fully move past. I have been very fortunate to have effective CBT which has reduced my OCD symptoms significantly, but when I order my favourite takeaway, I still got a ni**le in my mind when It arrives.

I know to stick to what I have learned in personal therapy and what I know as a professional, which is now allowing me to really enjoy foods differently more and more each time. If you relate to this in some way, you can move past these symptoms and start to enjoy life again with the right support. Now pass me a kebab! 🤤

Perspective is everything. 👁️

In CBT we teach you how to see an alternative or more balanced perspective independently when feeling trapped in unhelpful thinking patterns. Eventually meaning you no longer need us and can be your own therapist.

No one ever dies from anxiety. 💙

It can feel terrifying - racing heart, chest tightness, shortness of breath, dizziness, but these are your body’s natural stress responses, not signs of immediate danger. Even intense panic attacks or severe anxiety episodes do not directly cause heart attacks or death in otherwise healthy individuals.

Anxiety hijacks your body’s alarm system, making your brain think you’re in danger when you’re actually safe. This is why it feels so overwhelming: your body is reacting as if there’s a threat, even when there isn’t one.

Managing anxiety isn’t about magically stopping the physical sensations. It’s about noticing them, understanding what’s happening in your body, and letting the feelings pass without panic. Breathe. Ride it out. You’re safe and you’re stronger than your anxiety.

If Carlsberg did full circle moments, it would probably go something like this… ⭕️

After starting out working in the brewing industry where I initially became unwell, I stepped back both personally and professionally to recover and rebuild what is now a diverse career in mental health.

Yesterday at Beer X, I spoke about ‘Head Retention - Mental Well-Being in Brewing’, looking at how the wrong cultural ingredients can contribute to mental health difficulties within independent brewery settings.

It is never about blaming an industry, but understanding how things can quietly build and boil over, especially in small teams under numerous pressures.

The best part? The honesty in the room throughout when addressing this taboo and the inspiring conversations that followed.

This was both an emotional and personal one for me, and I am Incredibly grateful to be a part of making positive change within the industry.

Thank you for having me and here’s to keeping a Level Head.🍺
