Most people think high blood pressure is “just a number”… but this is what it’s actually doing inside your body 👀

Your arteries are under constant stress — and over time, that damage builds up silently.

If you’re a student nurse, understanding this is key for:
🩺 Cardiovascular conditions
🧠 Stroke risk
📊 Patient education

Save this so it sticks when you’re on placement

🚨 The Glass Test Could Save a Life… Here’s Why

Not all rashes are harmless and one simple check could help you spot something serious.

The glass test is used to identify a non-blanching rash, a key warning sign of meningitis or sepsis.

👉 Press a clear glass firmly against the rash
👉 If the rash does NOT fade, this is a RED FLAG

⚠️ This could indicate bleeding under the skin (petechiae or purpura) and requires URGENT medical attention

💡 Early recognition can save lives especially in children and vulnerable patients

🧠 Student nurse tip: Always think ABCDE + red flags when assessing any rash

❗️IMPORTANT – Educational Only
This content is for educational purposes only. If you notice a rash that does not fade under pressure or are concerned about symptoms, seek immediate medical advice from a qualified healthcare professional

Pulmonary embolism PE signs and symptoms Student Nurses must know 🫁🚨

If you’ve ever felt unsure recognising PE on placement or in OSCEs… this is for you.

👉 Sudden shortness of breath
👉 Chest pain
👉 Tachycardia
👉 Patient “just doesn’t feel right”

These are the signs you don’t ignore.

Using ABCDE thinking can help you spot deterioration early — and knowing what to do next is what keeps your patient safe.

💡 Think: Suspected PE = ACT FAST

Save this for placement — this is a real life emergency you WILL see 👀

Nursing hack to remember cannula sizes

18/03/2026

Do you know how to do the Glass Test for Meningitis?
A non-blanching rash is one of the most serious warning signs of meningitis and septicaemia.

The glass test can help identify if a rash is potentially dangerous.

🥛 How it works:
Press a clear glass firmly against the rash.

• If the rash fades under pressure → it may be a normal rash.
• If the rash does NOT fade (non-blanching) → this is a medical emergency and urgent medical attention is needed.

⚠️ A non-blanching rash can indicate meningococcal septicaemia, which can progress rapidly.

👩‍⚕️ Student Nurse Tip:
Always assess rashes alongside other meningitis red flags such as fever, photophobia, neck stiffness, headache, vomiting, and altered consciousness.

Student nurses struggle to remember cannula sizes and colours on placement.

So here’s a simple visual memory trick 👇

🌞 Yellow – 24G
☁️ Blue – 22G
🌸 Pink – 20G
🌿 Green – 18G
🪨 Grey – 16G
🌋 Orange – 14G

Think of it like moving through the layers of the earth.

Small at the top → bigger as you go deeper.

Save this for placement so you never get stuck when someone asks:
“What size cannula do you need?” 💉

The Insulin Types Every Student Nurse Must Know

Student nurses — insulin pharmacology can feel confusing, especially when revising for exams or preparing for placement.

So here’s a simple breakdown of insulin types you NEED to know 👇

💉 Rapid-acting insulin
💉 Short-acting insulin
💉 Intermediate insulin
💉 Long-acting insulin
💉 Mixed insulin

Understanding onset, peak and duration helps you safely administer insulin and recognise risks like hypoglycaemia or hyperglycaemia.
