🐾National Obesity Awareness Week - Supporting Your Dog's Health and Mobility🐾

Today marks the start of National Obesity Week, and it's an important reminder that pet obesity is a growing problem. Even being slightly overweight can have a big impact on your dog's health, including:

🐶 Increased strain on joints and the spine
🦴 Worsening arthritis and mobility issues
🏃‍♂️‍➡️ Reduce stamina and reluctance to exercise
🚑 Higher risk of injury and slower recovery after surgery

One of the most common questions our physiotherapy team hears from owners during post-surgery rehabilitation is:
👉 "is my dog's weight okay?"

Here's some simple guidance to help you check whether your dog is a healthy weight:

🔎 Look from above
Does your dog have a visible waist that tucks in behind the ribs?
- A healthy shape = a gentle 'hourglass'
- A concern = straight, tubular, or rounded 'rugby ball' shape

🫱 Feel the ribs
- Place your hands on your dog's ribcage
- Gently run your hands back towards the tail
- Can you feel the ribs easily without pressing firmly?
👍 YES = likely a healthy body condition
👎 NO = there may be some excess weight

Maintaining a healthy body condition is one of the most important things you can do to support your dog's movement, comfort, and long-term wellbeing 🐶💙🐾

If you have any concerns about your dog's weight, we recommend seeking advice from a veterinary professional.

Latissimus dorsi plays a big role in limb retraction and propulsion.

If it’s overworked or uncomfortable, it can affect performance, posture, and comfort in both horses and dogs!

Physiotherapy techniques such as soft tissue release, stretching, and tailored exercises can make all the difference. 🐴🐶

A veterinary physiotherapist can help relieve tension, restore comfort, and keep your animal moving at their best. 💆‍♀️✨
