Symptoms of Impetigo
Impetigo starts with red sores or blisters, but the redness may be harder to see in brown and black skin.
Impetigo is a contagious skin infection that, while generally not serious, can spread easily. Timely treatment can often lead to improvement within 7 to 10 days. Although anyone can contract impetigo, it is particularly common in young children.
Identifying impetigo involves recognizing its characteristic symptoms:
The infection typically begins with the development of red sores or blisters on the skin. Notably, the redness may be less apparent in individuals with brown or black skin.
These sores or blisters rapidly rupture, forming crusty, golden-brown patches on the affected area.
The patches may resemble cornflakes adhering to the skin’s surface and have the potential to enlarge.
Impetigo can spread to other parts of the body, and the affected area may be itchy and, at times, painful.
It’s important to note that individuals over the age of 1 experiencing these symptoms can be provided with treatment options. Healthcare professionals may offer a choice of antifungal cream or a course of oral antibiotics, depending on the severity and extent of the infection. This tailored approach aims to address the specific needs of each individual.
